Eyewitness Account
Where: Gethsemane
Who: Birds

Lately, as I have watched birds repeatedly attempt futilely to come through
the closed windows of my home, I am reminded of a story I wrote entitled
“Eyewitness Account”. As Easter is upon us I thought it would be
appropriate to share it with you. The following is a retelling of my own
story:
In Gethsemane hovered a flock of birds. They basically went unnoticed
except for their chirping and occasional droppings. At this time they had
suspended their work for someone they loved was in trouble, terrible
trouble. The Son of their creator was being roughed up. They could see
that there were angels all around, but the Son never called out for help,
not even when the crown of thorns was so cruelly shoved on His head causing
him to bleed profusely. Not so much as a plea for help was whispered as
they nailed the nails into His flesh causing excruciating pain and gushing
of blood. What had happened? What could cause man to be so cruel to their
Lord who gently spoke and cupped them in His hand. The birds had seen his
gentleness with man as well. What was this act of injustice? Did they not
know whom they were dealing with? Had they lost their minds? Did they not
know who’s Son he was?
As the cross was hoisted into the air, they decided to take a closer look.
They perched on the cross and looked. They heard his last words, “Father
why have you forsaken me?” They looked and saw the angels still in place.
They looked farther and saw the Father in prayer for His son. Before they
could tell him, he collapsed and died. The Father spoke, “Well done my
son, my son.”
The birds followed as they lay him in a cold tomb and continued to watch as
the angels came and tended to him. On the third day their master arose.
The angels celebrated as did his earthly friends. The birds of the air
celebrated.
As the birds celebrated so long ago, so we should also celebrate. Thank you
Jesus for dying for our sins so that we may be with you and the Father
forever.

I am a novice writer and painter who loves to be creative. I love singing but can't sing without a hymnal, except for children's songs. I love to make up my own songs and love the old hymns. I love to garden and got that love from my Mom and Dad who taught be everything I know from planting to harvesting to canning. I'm happy gardening, walking with my pug, JD Sir Winston Churchill, painting, and crafting. I love to spend Saturday's sitting in my rocker going through a bible study. I love working with elementary school aged children and seeing them use their creative gifts. I have taught Sunday school for a number of years and taught in the public schools for 18 years. I might say I'm retired but I spend most of my time subbing and enjoy it immensely. The kids spark my own creativeness.

  1. What a creative ‘bird’s eye view’ this is of Jesus love. I thought of Matthew 10:29-31 where Jesus used the illustration of how much the Father cared for, valued and loved the birds and yet how much more we people are valued in His sight. That is a lot of love to think about and be thankful for this Easter and how well your story portrays this fact.

  2. Wonderful story, Rena. The Bible states that All creation groans and longs for the restoration of all things. The birds, the sparrows, the the mother hen, the chicks and the rooster…Our God is cognizant of all these feathered creations of His and I believe, as your story suggests that they, too, know WHO IS LORD of ALL Nature.
    Thank you for sharing.
