Be Still and Know!

Sitting here thinking about the retreat (The Dance of Healing, ’06 NC) the one thing that really speaks to my heart is to be still and wait on the Lord. In today society everyone is just so busy. We even have to have portable phones so we can work while we stay in contact with our family and friends. Most of the time we don’t even realize how much stress we’re carrying on our shoulders. We don’t realize that we need to stop, get in a quite place and wait on the Lord. We need to stop talking and start listening. God created man to have a relationship. It’s hard to have a relationship with someone who never listens and always talks. Many times people don’t call on the Lord unless there are troubles in their lives. God wants us to have a relationship with him through the good times and the bad. He wants to have a two way conversation with his children. He wants us to call on him and he wants us to humble ourselves before him, wait on him and listen to what he’s saying. This has been difficult for me, but I pray that I can humble myself before my God and wait on him. My hearts desire is to do God’s will and to have a close relationship to the one whose never left my side.

  1. “But what is happiness except the simple harmony between a man and the life he leads?”
    – Lord Byron-

    I pray I too will be still, listen, wait and humble myself before I speak or move or act. I like the way you have brought to my attention, ” we don’t realize that we need to stop, get in a quite place and wait on the Lord.”

    Again, we just don’t realize it!!!!

    1. HO!! Chickenfarmer!!! Sara & D. have brought up some excellent points.
      Sara says,” we just don’t realize it” It reminds me of her teaching on Jacob & the rock-pillow in Genesis. God is in this place and I didn’t even know it.
      There’s a song title…”HE WAS THERE ALL THE TIME….waiting patiently in line…” in line after coffee; in line after phone calls; in line after errands; in line after TV; in line after the dishes, the emails, the mailbox;in line after the newspaper, the latest catalogs; in line, in line, in line!
      Oh Sweetest Lord, who do I think I am (humble myself, like Chickenfarmer says) that I would make the Creator of the universe wait on me till I thought I had done everything else while YOU wait, wait, wait with graciousness, love and compassion and a longing for me to listen to YOUR HOLY SPIRIT, to the secrets You want to tell me to help me live my life in purity and holiness.
      I don’t want to just talk ABOUT YOU, I want to talk WITH YOU.
      Help me climb Jacob’s ladder into Your awesome presence and LISTEN!!

  2. Thanks for your thoughtful insights Chickenfarmer. The part that really hit me was about it being hard for God (or anybody) to have a relationship with someone who never listens. When you put it like that I can see what is meant by a ‘one-sided coversation’ with God never able to get a word in edgewise. I realize my ‘talk’ can be a continuos stream of thoughts in my mind that won’t let me be quiet as well as a blabbering tongue. Also busyness can keep me ‘noisy’ as well. I’m with you on wanting and needing that close relationship. Thanks again.

  3. You are right He does want us to call on Him….but as you have said every one is soooo busy that some times even when the need arises we still just dont even take the time to be still or to even call on Him….and we end up in a bigger mess and it sure would be better for us if we just had a little talk with Jesus…and along with you and the rest of the Daily Lily I too have a desire to do Gods will and be so close in relationship with God that I can feel His heart beat…dj

  4. I wonder how many times God has waited to talk to us. You are so right we are so busy with careers and stuff during are waking hours. Even our minds at night are not quiet enough to get a word in edgewise. The retreat also impressed upon me to be still and wait upon God. Somehow we need to make a daily appointment with God and keep it. Our relationship depends upon it, otherwise, there is no relationship.

    1. Rena, I think you really hit the nail on the head. Make an appointment with God. Remember the song we all learned and sang many times with Sis Gwen. ” I have an appointment with God.” (Maybe I can find the words and add here later, check back.)

      I read the below somewhere one day and it started me on a journey to think about my appointments.

      “God reveals a time that He wants to meet with us, and if we should choose to meet with Him at a different time, sorry! He will not be there. He has put His presence in the time He has made holy. Perhaps this is an oversimplification, but the point is valid. God has set a time in which—by appointment—we are to meet with Him. No other time is acceptable to meet with Him.”

      1. Sara, I believe this is the song you were speaking of..You have an appointment with God;
        You have an appointment with God;
        He’s here to meet you, my friend;
        This is the moment that you’ve waited for;
        You have an appointment with God.

        You have an appointment with God
        The days of suffering are o’er;
        He’ll dry your tears, and He’ll meet your soul;
        You have an appointment with God

  5. Wendy,
    What a truthful blog! Oh….to have the patience and determination to get
    alone with God, in this BUSY life! How He wants to commune with us. When I am
    reminded of how much He loves us and wants to communicate with us, it is
    painful to think that, at times, I am too BUSY to talk with my heavenly
    Father. Thank you for reminding us that He truly wants to talk to us, if we
    will only…be still, and listen!
