  1. Peacocks…The peack was in great demand for stately entertainment..sometimes made into a pie .the head and feathers decorated it..the pies were served at banquets of chivalry when knights pledged themselves to go on perilous journies also an important Christmas dish..(Washington Irving..1819-20)
@ chr. 9;21 That King Solomon recieved from the ships of Tarsish silver, Ivory and apes and peacocks..they considered them important treasures.
From the “ChristStory Bestiary ” on line under Peacks..The peacock is known as the bird with one hundred eyes, the eye like pattern in its tail represent the stars, universe, the sun, the moon, the vault of heaven..To christians this birds many eyes are symbols of omniscience, the all seeing God, and the all seeing church. The peacocks “eyes also symbolize the beatific vision(i.e. the desired perception and knowledge of God as He truly is, enjoyed by angels, Christ, and the Saints in Heaven….
the peacock is symbol of such compassion and empathy that it is thought to die of grief at the passinof its mate…the peack is a symbol of beauty, prosperity, royalty, love, compassion the soul and peace…..dj

  2. I didn’t know what the peacock symbolized in Christianity until I looked it up on the internet. In addition to what Dorothy wrote, I found that the peacock is a symbol of immortality and resurrection. It was believed that the flesh of the peacock would never spoil, evidenced by the old feathers being replaced continually with more colorful ones.
It would seem to me that the Good Shephard symbolically watches over the flock (this would represent the all-seeing eyes of the peacock), causing it to prosper. The praying hands could represent the eternal, immortal prayers of our Good Shepherd, Jesus, always interceding on our behalf before the Father for our good. Prayer changes things and this could tie in to the fact that peacocks ‘exchange’ their old feathers for beautiful new ones.

  3. DJ’s & Debi’s offerings were excellent and insightful and I learned a lot from their comments. So, I thought about the “praying hands” and recall that they are very weathered, elderly hands; perphaps it’s because are used to being clasped in prayer for many hours, many days, many years. These hands have veins protruding and the fingers are slightly gnarled. To me that represents PERPETUAL PRAYER…the kind of prayer Paul was talking about when he said, “Pray without ceasing”; earnest prayer; intense prayer; intercessory prayer; prayer that brings to the birth. Perhaps the Praying hands represent The PRAYER that this proverb is speaking of when it says,” more things are wrought by prayer than this world drams of.”

I researched “praying hands” on Wikipedia this is what I found.
The praying mantis hook is the signature hand posture of Northern Praying Mantis style martial arts.
It is primarily used in seizing the opponent’s arm in order to divert their attack or to draw them closer in order to carry out an attack. It can also be used to pluck an opponent’s fist out of the air. There may be some information there useful for prayer.

  5. I found this when I typed in praying hand and clicked search…Albercht Durer..Praying Hands….it tells the story of two brothers who tossed a coin to chose who would persue studies and who would work to put them thru studies…Albrecht Durer was first to persue studies for four years while Albert worked in the coal mines for four years…then when the time was completed..it was to be Alberts turn to persue studies..but it was too late he said his hands were damaged by the long hard work and his fingers were each broken and he had arthritis..he could not even hold a glass to toast in celebration of his brothers accomplished studies….so in honor of Albert, Albrecht created the “Hands”…now known as “The Praying Hands”….

  6. “Shepherd” is an ancient metaphor which depicts one who cares for his flock or who is in the pastorial role. In Ezekiel 34:23 it says: And I (GOD) WILL SET UP ONE SHEPHERD (Jesus) OVER THEM, and he shall feed them, even my servant David (meaning a type of person unto David and David would be an ancestor of Jesus): he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.

John 10: 1-5 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

    John 10: 9 -11
(Jesus said,)9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

Hebrews 13: 20-21 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us [1] that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Also Psalm 23 puts it so beautifully that Jesus cares and loves us.

The peacock to me represents God. I had a dream that we as Christians were dressed in peacock feathers. On contemplating about this type of dress, it came to me that only God could be all seeing and all knowing and that the eyes on the peacock can not see but are ornamental. The color of the feathers are of royalty and when we come to know Jesus we are dressed in a new robe that indicates our status of who are Father is. He is majestic. We must be dressed appropriately accompanied with knowing the right voice (THE GOOD SHEPERD – JESUS) to enter in to his presense. This is like the study we had “Dressing for His Glory”. We must put on the character of Jesus. We must pursue a goal of excellence.

On thinking of the praying hands. I thought of what others wrote and I thought about the praying hands I have from Bethlehem. In summary, it occured to me that we need to be properly dressed for King Jesus (THE GOOD Shepherd). He is the only way we have entrance into heaven. It takes lots of love and perfecting of our character represented by the narled praying hands. This change of character and heart can only be done through lots of prayer and change of character and attitude. Jesus sits and prays for each of us to come, and we pray to be an overcomer the world and stand dressed in excellence, taking on the character of Jesus.
