Prayer: You Call Us From Our Settled Ways

O God, you call us from our settled ways,
out of old habits and rutted traditions.
You call us into the land of promise,
to new life and new possibilities.
Make us strong to travel the road ahead.
Deliver us from false security and comfort,
desire for ease and uninvolved days.
Let your Word and Spirit dwell in us
that your will may be fulfilled in us
for the well-being and shalom of all.
Amen.

  1. There are so many depths of thought to this prayer. But, recently with so many viruses going around that we could catch or give to another, I thought about false security and comfort in my own life. We are told daily washing hands often and correctly is a very necessary necessity. Too long and too often can become a boring job, don’t you think?

A creativity school teacher, MG, gave me a wonderful tip. “PRAY THE LORD’S PRAYER.” WOW, I loved that and hand washing has become a real joy. Just think if ‘necessary’ rooms around the world would start ringing with The Lord’s Prayer handwashing what might just happen.

  2. “FROM OUR SETTLED WAYS”, indeed!! Yes, Lord, call us away from those “Ways”! “RUTTED TRADITIONS”? For what? To keep us stymied in the past so that we can’t see the present and the glorious future that we have given up so easily, out of a desire to remain comforable and sluggish and unforutnately, sometimes, slovenly!! Unspiritual religion keeps us so bound to the past traditions that we fail to see what GOD is doing, NOW! “Behold! I make all things new”, says the LORD. (Rev.) That includes us!!!

  3. Yes I see the connection the Lords prayer has…V.C.Anderson says “Deliver us from false security and comfort”…Jesus says”Deliver us from evil”…I too with Sara will find joy in hand washing and saying the Lords prayer as I will be being delivered of the evil of germs and viruses as I do so….and at the same time the living Word will be going forth ….This made me think of this scripture..John 15;3..Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you…..(yes a land of promise)..His Kingdom…dj

  4. Sounds from above comments that multi-tasking is going on and we are moving out of settled, one task ways as we wash, sanitize, pray and let prayers ring out across the land.
I was reminded of Eph 5:26,27 where the Lord said He wanted to sanctify and cleanse His church with ‘the washing of the water and the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

  5. Sara have you seen the movie night at the muesem i thought that that was a great movie and that was a great thing for you to say!

  6. Toto…I was just talking to my son about seeing “Night at the Museum” today. Then you asked me? OK, you are way out ahead of me but I hope to see it soon.

Have a great week at school this week. I know your teacher, Ms. O is sooooooo proud of you.

Toto, your friend Grace now has her picture up with her blogs, if you and your parents would like to have yours up we would just love to post it.  I know Ms. O has a beautiful picture of you as well.  Just let us know.

  7. Rena, as I read your blogs and prayed this prayer again today for myself and others I realized just how quick you have responded. I love the part that God has called us into the land of promise and if we clean house discarding old ways, old habits, rutted traditions and all false security and comfort we will have a home of promise.

Keep moving and land right into the home of promise.
