I’ve found the great Foot Counselor in my study this morning.
He’s written a great book called the Bible.
And His name is God.
In Chapter 4 of Proverbs he gives great foot counsel.
Verse 26 reads Ponder the path of your feet.
And let all your ways be established.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil.

Here is some more godly “foot counseling”.
“Blessed is the man who does not WALK in the counsel of the wicked or STAND in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.”
That means I do NOT take ungodly counsel from the world when I know that Jesus would not do what is suggested just to be “cool” or regarded as “in” or do it because “EVERYBODY” is doing it or that is the way OUR FAMILY has always done it. Taking a new look at things concerning our decisions, our relationships and our families might be painful at first, but if we choose on the side of the Holy Spirit, in the end it will produce the PEACEABLE FRUITS of righteousness.
This foot counselor stays on the run it seems. Or, maybe He stays still. Hum! How many times have I just set my feet on the wrong path just to keep what I thought might be peace?
Proverbs 1:15 “… do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;”
Hurrying to make a decision has been a problem of mind. In hurrying and trying to bring what I thought was peace only brought the opposite. I read an article that said that the mind is always ready for chaos so when rushed, it will operate out of fear which we know is not of the Lord (wrong path). The article said life is not chaotic so tell the person you need some space to get back to them, or give the mind a gap to think of the consequences of what the decision will bring about.
The article said that if you had that pattern or as Sara has said that old rut in your mind, it bears to be repeated. When faced with a recent decision, I knew the disappointment of the previous rushed decision and put the red flag up (as Sara suggested) to stop and think through instead of jumping in the rut.
“How many times have I just set my feet on the wrong path just to keep what I thought might be peace?” My answer…too many. Why? To avoid conflict because it is difficult, often painful and stressful to handle. I think communicating effectively when facing conflict requires skill and wisdom and when you feel inadequate in these areas I tend to want to run. Thankfully, I have had the encouragement and wisdom many times from Sara to help me face and navigate through conflict.
And I appreciate the question and reminder to face myself and ask again,”How many times have I just set my feet on the wrong path just to keep what I thought might be peace?” because it’s easier for me to choose a ‘comfort path’ to walk rather than a rough, uphill one. But a ‘false’ peace is not the Lord’s peace at all and won’t lead anyone anywhere but to eventual hell.
Another need I have found in my life which I’m working on is buying things to fill a void in my life. The mirror of this was held up to me by a wonderful friend – very painful to see yourself in this light but truth. I also worked for a short time in retail store and show basket after basket of clothing being bought – another mirror. Some of the ladies would say I don’t know why I’m doing this but the prices are just too good. I wish I could stop. They weren’t buying for resale either. I would see them again and again. Then in a couple of days they would return, sometimes with husband in tow, making sure they did so or others just kept the items.
I know heaping things on self – is stealing from God? (wrong path) Why then do I do it?
How much more could I have helped with Haiti, Japan if I had given
what I just spent? How much could I have done for God’s work
in other parts of the world or at home with that same money?
What void needs to be filled? Who can fill void? (I know God can, but
do I allow him to fill that gaping hole? Yes I know the scriptures, why don’t I then?)
How do I know when I have gone over the top in the wrong direction?
When do I remove my foot from the store (wrong direction)or the impulse buying which is wrong? When do I avoid clicking on a web site to buy, buy? It so easy I have done it before I can get the RED FLAG up to stop.
I have had lots of FOOT Counseling and it gets better and better with Museum Walks as Sara has suggested (taking a walk when you know you do not have a need for anything and enjoying the color, design, and creativity of artistans).
Yes it is daily working on it. Sometimes I fail and other times I succeed as I continue to need FOOT Counseling.
Sometimes when we have truthful open dialogue we find we might just have been slightly wrong. Or, at least see how others were thinking and why and help them see maybe they had the wrong view. Or, at the very least see why we were thinking or acting the way we were or do.
The Holy Spirit and Jesus seem to enlist us to have relationship with them so we can have earthly relationships and get our feet in condition for museum walks.
Osteen wrote; “You don’t have to hide in your job. You don’t have to hide in relationships. You don’t have to hide in food or addictions because God Himself promises to hide you! He freely offers you shelter from the storms of life any time you call on His name.”
“Remember, there’s only one place the enemy cannot find you. There’s only one place where opposition cannot steal from you. There’s only one true place of safety and rest for your soul, and that is in the arms of Jesus.”
Amen! If I dwell in the secret place of the Most high GOD & abide in the Shadow of the Almighty nestling under HIS wings i will find refuge there. When I am rejected, or my ideas are mocked, or when I am insulted or put down He is my Refuge.
Do I need to run to a HOT FUDGE SUNDAE or the VILLAGE CLOTHING STORES for comfort and consolation? NO! I Must Put my feet on the path to the SHELTER, the SANCTUARY. Holy Spirit will give the directions to do what GARY preached yesterday, “Listen, Hear,Do, Be”

I’d like to share the footnotes for Proverbs 4: 23-27. Read with me: “Our heart–our feelings of love and desire–dictates to a great extent how we live because we always find time to do what we enjoy. Solomon tells us to guard our hearts above all else, making sure we concentrate on those desires that will keep us on the right path. Make sure your affections lead you in the right direction. Put boundaries on your desires. Don’t go after everything you see. Look straight ahead, keep your eyes fixed on your goal, and don’t get sidetracked on detours that lead to sin.”
Interesting isn’t this? : “put boundaries on your desires.”
Needles, most interesting and most appropriate! I love how ‘we find time to do what we enjoy.’ That involves time, energy, money and words….

O, how we trust Him to direct our steps. A foot counselor He is…..

If our desires do not line up with God’s truth then ditch them. In a study I’m doing entitle The Conversation Peace the memory verse is Ephesians 4: 22-24
“You were taught, with regard to your former ways of life, to put off the old self, which is being corrupted by its DECEITFUL DESIRES; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be God in true righteousness and holiness.” Mary Kassian goes on to say, “Putting off the old and putting on the new is an ongoing process of become more Christlike (sanctification). Putting on the new means that we dress our minds with new clothing. Paul explains that this means replacing patterns of falsehood with patterns of truth (Eph. 4:25)….Truth the opposite of deceit – guards our hearts and minds from being misled. It purifies and keeps the soil of our hearts pure.
What I’m finding is that those patterns as Pastor Gary mentioned on Sunday are ingrained in us since birth, seem to speak from our being saying, I’m the truth and have always been the truth. What a nighmare when you wake up to the fact that the bases of your thinking was all a lie. Thank goodness for people to those who speak truth into our lives, to the Holy Spirit who sheds light on the scriptures if we would ask, and to Jesus who desires that we not be ignorant.
Yes – Foot Counselors are much needed.
Rena’s comment, “ongoing process”…has a way of saying to me that we have segments in our life that are custom build for growing truth into the fibre of our being.
There’s a lot of encouragement in your statement Sara. When truth grows into our fibre it seems to me that’s as genuine as it gets…through and through. That is real character and integrity.
Debi, you are right and my words are dynamo! But, ‘truth growing in my fibre’ is the catch. Fibre; Dictionary; ‘strength of character : a weak person with no moral fiber.’
