New Beginnings;

“Sometimes we can only find our true direction when we let the wind of change carry us.” —Mimi Novic

This beautiful yet, maybe fearful, quote by Mimi Novic reminds us that resisting change often blocks our progress.

find your true direction

Nicodemus and Jesus were having a conversation about spiritual things that seemed impossible to understand when Nicodemus asked Jesus; “How can these things be?” Jesus replied with a metaphor that we might be able to understand.

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)

Jesus teaches us about the spirit saying the divine indwelling Spirit is theAdvocate,” who is “with you and in you,” makes you live with the same life that he lives, and unites you to everything else (John 14:16–20). He assures us the “Spirit of truth” will “teach you everything” and “remind you of all things” (John 14:26)

Terry Moran, a news reporter with one network for over 30 years, was abruptly fired one day. After about 10 months, I heard him talking about the new platform he had started. He was excited, vibrant, and seemed renewed as he announced his new venture. He said, “I like to say, I’ve walked out of … black and white and into technicolor. Walked out of yesterday and into tomorrow.” (*See Terry’s full announcement link below)

Have you a story of New Beginnings? What brought the new about for you?

  1. What a great photo by Chris Mar! It illustrates what you wrote, Sara, so perfectly.

It was encouraging to read the post about Terry Moran and his new beginnings…quite a story of change! And it was also very encouraging to read your words and scriptures, Sara, about our Advocate who can help us and lead us into ‘new beginnings’.

I find ‘new beginnings’ in my home yard each spring. It is always sad to see summer/fall flowers get bitten by frost and cold and turn brown and become lifeless in winter. And then to see vegetables that had been green and thriving in ground and raised beds stop yielding produce, wither and die. But then, even though the season has ended, eventually spring comes… and so do new plants; new varieties to try; new planting schemes and places to plant; new things to learn; and last summer, even a new hobby backyard greenhouse to extend the season and try new growing ideas. New beginnings in the garden mean things may be very different each year…new weather patterns; new insects; new challenges. But it is always amazing to watch the life that God has put into a tiny seed grow and develop into a fully grown unique plant.

    1. Interesting Debi that you have added a backyard greenhouse to your hobbies. I’ve noticed recently neighbors adding greenhouses to their yards. At least 2 people retiring and finding their new. Seems so nice to find a happy spot in nature. Congrats on your new beginnings!

      1. Yes, I think it is a nice “happy spot in nature.” It gets real hot in there in the summer, so I have been looking into what to plant that thrives in high temps. I planted okra last pm and will see how that does.

  2. “Have you a story of New Beginnings? What brought the new about for you?”

On thinking about Terry Moran’s story, knowing he’s a Christian and having followed him for many years and knowing him to be a man of great integrity and hearing you’re fired for telling the truth is shocking.

Yet, after about 10 months,he overcame and truly found his new direction by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When I read the scriptures about the work of the Holy Spirit being our advocate and truth teller,I rejoice.

I have lived long enough to have many new beginnings after very difficult situations. The death of my father as a child! That truly brought the new about for me. I lived in a-small community where all kids had Dads but not me. That made people think and say rude things. My Dad had a stroke and rushed to the hospital and died within hours.

We cried and struggled in many ways, yet my Mom knew and believed in the words from her Bible. She believed the Holy Spirit was her advocate. And, he was truly her advocate. She taught my siblings and myself this truth as she lived it out for all to see.

It was hard and painful, but she proved her truth:“the Holy Spirit,Spirit of truth, will “teach you everything” and “remind you of all things” (John 14:226).

Terry said, “I like to say, I’ve walked out of … black and white and into technicolor. Walked out of yesterday and into tomorrow.”

I would like to say as a child I took that walk and never looked back when I discovered this truth:God will be a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” Psalm 68:5

Isaiah 54::5 states, “For your Maker is your husband——the Lord Almighty is his name.Notes:“The concept highlights God’s role in stepping in to fulfill the responsibilities of a husband to those who have lost their spouses. This iincludes:

    • Provision: Meeting physical, emotional, and financial needs.
    • Protection: Acting as a defender and judge on their behalf.
    • Companionship: Offering unconditional love, comfort, and security.” [1234]
    • Psalm 68:5-6: Describes God as a “father to the fatherless, a defender of widows”.

I have been greatly blessed from this new direction. I have walked through life with other disappointments, divorce, loss of siblings, among other issues of church disappointments, yet God’s truth has remained the same. Terry’s story as well as many others confirm the truth. If you find yourself in a place needing a new direction, seek out the Advocate…

    Thanks for reading my story!

    1. Thanks for writing your story, Sara. I really enjoy your storytelling writing…and how you weave in the real life examples, scriptures and your thoughts.

  3. It’s Sunday morning in No Va! I understand it may be night where you are.

I feel someone might need and appreciate this scripture as much as I do in my morning today so I would like to share with you.

“The end of a thing is better than its beginning; The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.” ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭7‬:‭8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/114/ecc.7.8.NKJV

  4. The footnotes for John 3:8 (NLT) says: “ Jesus explained that we cannot control the work of the Holy Spirit. He works in ways we cannot predict or understand. Just as you did not control your physical birth, so you cannot control your spiritual birth. It is a gift from God through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8: 16; 1 Corinthians 2: 10-12; 1Thessalonians 1:5, 6).”

The footnotes for John 14: 26 (NLT) says: “ Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would help them remember what he had been teaching them. This promise ensures the validity of the New Testament . The disciples were eyewitnesses of Jesus‘ life and teachings, and the Holy Spirit helped them remember without taking away their individual perspectives. We can be confident that the Gospels are accurate records of what Jesus taught and did (see 1 Corinthians 2: 10-14). The Holy Spirit can help us in the same way. As we study the Bible, we can trust him to plant truth in our mind, convince us of God’s will and remind us when when we stray from it.”

Walking through difficult situations in this life, like broken relationships, loss of loved ones, and the list could continue, sure isn’t easy to endure, but knowing God is there seeing you through, and having friends pray for you, makes the hard times bearable. Thankful for new beginnings. 🙏

    1. Tammy’s footnotes are some fighting words. When you are in the wind of the Holy Spirit there is no space for unbelief, apathy, self-pity, laziness, etc etc

This brings to mind an old Hymn,

🎶Sing them over again to me
      Wonderful words of life
Let me more of their beauty see
      Wonderful words of life
      Words of life and beauty
      Teach me faith and duty

      Beautiful words, wonderful words
      Wonderful words of life
      Beautiful words, wonderful words
      Wonderful words of life🎶

Footnotes; “Wonderful Words of Life” is a beloved Christian gospel hymn written and composed by Philip P. Bliss in 1874. It celebrates the beauty, guidance, and eternal truth found in the teachings of the Bible.”

As Tammy’s notes said; “The Holy Spirit can help us in the same way. As we study the Bible, we can trust him to plant in our mind, convince us of God’s will and remind us when when we stray from it.”
