See Part I
See Part II

I read the headlines in the news early morning and I found myself beginning to sing the Christmas Blues. Why don’t you just sing a few news bars along with me:

“The Twelve Days of Christmas”
How does one sing this song in 05
Estimated price of ’12 Days of Christmas’ gift list up sharply due to gas and gold prices and the bird flu.

‘Christmas’ missing from Bushes’ card
Quote from Psalm 28 but not Merry; so not good enough

“10 Reasons to drink over the Holidays”
My in-laws and……..

Now, I thought why don’t I try changing my tune to some things that my Mother (a generational positive) taught me and have kept me focused over many years.

Chant along with me….

“I am the light of the world, He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, But have the light of life (John 8:12 NKJV)

“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.
(Psalm 145:18 NKJV)

“They shall obtain joy and gladness and sorrow and sighing shall flee away”

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:17 NKJV)

“…Happy are the people whose God is the Lord! ”(Psalm 144:15 NKJV)

“Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone works wonders” (Psalm 72:18 NASB)

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NIV)

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men” (Luke 2:14 NKJV)

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. (Matthew 2:10 NKJV)

God, Light, Hope, Happiness, Salvation, Wonder, Peace, Trust and Joy were all starting to fill my heart to overflowing. I realized I knew the One that I wanted to make up my world. Yet at times others would squeeze in my thoughts and take up my time.

If you are struggling with GN try using my formula,

Part I See Part I of GN -Passivity –“Take Up Your Bed and Walk”

Part II See Part II of GN -Obedience –“Let Your Light Shine”

Using the words of C. Wright Mills from Part II GN

“Often you get the best insights by considering extremes—by thinking of the opposite of that which you are directly concerned.”

Part III-Trust-The One that makes up your world!!!!

OK here we go!!!!!

High gas prices, no Merry Christmas from White House, can’t find the latest game. My ______________have all become outlaws!!!!!

Why do I allow all the negatives to occupy my time? GN Red Hot-anger followed by the GN Christmas Blues-sad and mad is my kind of guy.

Ask yourself, just who does make up my world? Are they trustworthy and do they warrant me exchanging my Light, Hope, Salvation, Happiness, Wonder and Peace for red hot anger and the Christmas blues?

Do you know anyone more interesting, more inspiriting, more loving, caring and helpful and always available than the One that has the ability to be and give to you Light, Hope, Salvation, Happiness, Wonder, Peace, Trust and Joy?

Let us trade in the generational negatives (GN) for generational positives (GP) and have ourselves a very Merry Christmas! Jesus is the reason for our generational positives (GP).

  1. Thank you for that piece of Christmas Joy, Sara. That has inspired me this snowy morning. In the music classroom we have been singing songs of the “season”..the Christmas season and the Hannukkah Season..so that all (or most) may rejoice. And one of the songs that the children request mostly is THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS.
So, predicated on your timely message this morning…here goes…( starting from the end to the beginning…Like God Who knows the end from the beginning,)….
On the 12th Day of Christmas Let’s Give to our TRUE LOVE;..
12 gifts of love; 11 words of wisdom; 10 words of comfort; 9 hymns of praise; 8 works of kindness;7 words of hope; 6 gifts of joy; 5 golden positives; 4 joyful smiles; 3 charitable gifts; 2 songs of thanks and a Partridge in a Pear Tree..(which are hard to find this season!!) Let’s not make the other days of the 12 Days hard to find, too. This season, let’s follow Sara’s Guidelines…and set the tone for the world to see that we celebrate Christ, first and foremost.

      1. Oh, that it were so!!!! How wonderful it would be if we could freely share the Lord with our students. However, one thing we can do is be witnesses for the Lord in the classroom. As it is now, we must teach virtue & character by committee.
But in the Spirit of GN III we praise GOD that even so, it (they are) is being taught in some capacity

  2. This is helpful and made me think in practical terms…why would I entertain anger or worry or sadness within my world (me)? I wouldn’t invite bugs and diseases into the greenhouse..they would ruin the crop. And if they did get in I better use a pesticide formula and get rid of them before they take over.
Thanks for your formula today…I have been using it and it does work!

  3. Thank you for the article. It reminds me that my students also face those GN. I’m constantly encouraging them to reach for their goals.
One student asked me, “Would you always pick me out of the trash can, when I get that low?” Thank goodness we have a God who does just that. May we try and be like Jesus this season. Change our attitude if it’s not right and make some one’s day. Maybe you will be the one to pick someone out of the trash can and you didn’t even know it.

  4. This article reminded me of that old cliche “Keep Christ in CHRISTmas”. I have heard it a million times, but it is true. Instead of worrying about shopping trips with in-laws, or who is hosting what holiday event, I am going to focus on the fact that it is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. Thanks Sara for putting things in perspective.

  5. Thanks Sara, as I was reading this last night I could only think on what the Prophet Isaiah wrote?

Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You. Because he trusts in You.”

  6. If it were not for Jesus being the reason for the season we would not be able to even see the negetives nor even know about the positive…His light shows the negetive He gives hope and help to get rid of them (trade them in)making strong the positives allowing the true peace and joy to come shining through…in trust…in Him…its a good trade to make for Christmas Thank you Sara for this 3rd chapter..dj

    1. Thanks for this insight Dorothy. As I look at the shining Christmas lights what wonderful reminders they are of this exchanged life Jesus offers us(Gn for GP)and we can have and speak of to others.
