My Testimony-Pharm D

Q. From Sara…Heather, when did you realize your mission on earth was to be a pharmacist?
A. I hadn’t even considered pharmacy until my senior year in high school. I had gone from nurse anesthesia, to nuclear medicine technology, to a medical doctor. (Obviously, I was interested in the medical field.) My mom graduated from the school I attend now and since I hadn’t really decided on any college or any specific field, for that matter, I decided to check it out–despite the fact I didn’t want to leave Texas. Then I ran across pharmacy (that is the flagship program here at ULM) and thought, I think I would really enjoy that. I have always enjoyed studying, and pharmacy is definitely a field I will have to continuously study in. So I filled out my application and sent it in. I began praying that God would show me if this was really what He wanted me to do. My family and I drove to ULM one day and talked to the pharmacy advisor and I received several informative materials on pharmacy school and pharmacy practice. I began to realize everything you can actually do as a pharmacist. You can do so much more than the typical retail jobs that people think about (like Wal-Mart or CVS or Walgreens.) There is the medicinal aspect of the job as well as the patient interaction. I finally got the response back from ULM that said I was accepted, my out-of-state fees would be waived, and I received a great scholarship that paid for almost all of the first 4 years. Pharmacy school is now a 6 year program at the minimum, but I will have my doctorate at the end of it. God worked everything out so wonderfully, and I actually had a peace about it (which I hardly ever get about anything.)
I did question pharmacy occasionally–well, maybe a lot!–once I got further into my school. Even before I actually got accepted in pharmacy school, after going through the interview and essay process, I really questioned it. It was going to be way tougher than I thought. The schooling was very difficult and stressful and I wasn’t even in the program yet! About 2 years ago, I was home for the summer, just getting to have some time for myself to spend with my family and God. I spent hours just reading God’s Word and thinking and praying. I had just met Erick several months before and he had no idea I was struggling with school and my future. Anyway, the same time I really was crying out desperately to God, he e-mailed me an article about a pharmacist missionary in Guatemala and sent me an encouraging note along with it. He told me God could use me with my willingness to serve Him in the area of pharmacy. That e-mail was sent from God through Erick. I couldn’t believe it; it was just the answer I needed at just the right time! Since then, I have had other encouragements along the way–coming at just the right time, of course! Some have been through my Christian friends, some through customers at work, and obviously, some from certain passages of Scripture that God shows me or reminds me about at just the right time! Everytime I want to quit, God picks me back up! So through these series of events, I am continually encouraged to become the best pharmacist I can be and to use the knowledge I obtain to help others. I can do so much with a Pharm D. and can easily go on medical mission trips when I graduate. I can’t wait! But until then, I will let God guide me through school and I must continue to study, study, study!

  1. What an inspiring testimony, Heather, of seeing how God is leading and guiding you in your vocation. And what an example to others seeking their career path of your willingness and obedience to follow the Lord when He directs. Thanks for sharing this.

  2. Heather thank you for sharing how God is leading and guiding you in your life. I would hope that others would lean upon God for the answers that He has for them. I’m sure with your determination, constantly seeking God, and God’s gifting you in this field, you will see your goal as Pharmacist come true and that God will use you to help and inspire many to walk the path you have walked. God also always has those to encourage you just when you need it as you are loved by God and nothing is too good for the ones He loves.

    1. Heather, thank you for showing us God’s supernatural power in everyday situations and events. How reassuring to know GOD’S will for oneself and be confident and knowing and doing God’s Plan and Purpose for one’s life; that it is being accomplished, supernaturally!
How encouraging….not only for those who are considering their schooling options but those of us who need to “kick it up a notch” in the “call” GOD has already shown us.
Keep up the good work and “be not weary in well-doing.”

  3. Heather, what a beautiful encouraging testimony to the loving care of God as Father…He knows the paths He has for us to take and He shines the light on every step and we have but to stop and look as you have done…He encourages us with each step we take and leads us on in that which He has for us….thank you for sharing this awsome testimony….DJ

  4. I TOO HAD A DIFFICULT TIME DECIDING WHAT I WANTED TO BE. I STARED OUT IN SECRETARIAL CLASSES, THEN BEAUTY CULTURE, FINALLY NURSING. I WASNT REALLY SURE ABOUT IT BUT GOD HAD HIS PLAN. I JUST FOLLOWED HIS DIRECTION. NURSING HAS MANY WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITIES, SO I WAS TOLD BUT I HAVENT FIGURED THEM OUT YET. OH YEAH I WORK WITH NEEDLES. I HOPE WHEN YOU START TO PRACTICE YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY WORK WITH SOME ONE LIKE NEEDLES OR CHICKEN FARMER. IT WILL NEVER SEEM LIKE WORK, ITS LIKE GETTING PAID TO LAUGH AND PLAY.

    1. Heather, one never knows where God may call them. Maybe one day you will have the opportunity to work with Jersey-N-Needles. You are joined with them through The Daily Lily and you are with the very best and if you have the opportunity to one day work with them in the medical field you will surely be blessed. They are the very best.

  5. Heather,
As you know, from my bio. that it took me a little while to decide what I wanted to do also. God’s Word tells us: “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct our path.” Heather, keep acknowledging God and He will do as He says! Thank you, for your testimony.
