Happiness Belongs to You!

Benjamin Franklin was concluding a moving speech on the guarantees of the Constitution when a heckler shouted, “Those words don’t mean anything. Where’s all the happiness you said it guarantees us?” Franklin smiled and calmly silenced his critic.
“My friend, the Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness; you have to catch it yourself.”

Jesus, expounded this same teaching with the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). When we read Blessed are you, we are reading and hearing “Happy are you:”

Try reading the scriptures below by replacing Blessed with Happy and catch happiness.

And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3) Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 )Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5) Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6) Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7) Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8) Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10) Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11) Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Many of us have read and reread and even memorized the Beatitudes from early childhood and yet at times finding ourselves very unhappy in different situations.

For exercise let’s take vs. 9 (MSG) and read it this way, “ Blessed (Happy) are you when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.”

I have realized more and more how joy and happiness are there for the taking. I understand it quite well now. I have a bicycle, treadmill and other such things sitting in my home. Yes, that’s right, mine, paid in full, in my home, beautiful, lovely decorations. If I want the benefit of these items I need to do something. Would you agree?

So it is with happiness! Just sitting in your home, paid for by the Blood of The Lamb, Jesus Himself. The question is do you want happiness or are you content with misery?

Warning! “Misery loves company.” But, happy and blessed are you when you run from misery and induce His Peace to those around you.

“My friend, the Bible guarantees us the right to pursue happiness; you have to catch it yourself.” Happiness is a journey…not a destination.

  1. W C Fields on happiness said, Go ahead and smile the first thing in the morning and get it over with.

  2. As I went back to read again your blogs pertaining to happiness I see that happiness is really a choice or the choices we make. It is becoming a GP (generational positive) as you wrote about rather than a GN for you said in GP that “He wants us to become trusting and happy..” For me, that means I make a choice to be that way.
Thanks for this article. In the midst of a trying week it has been uplifting to sing aloud these beatitudes and get happy.

  3. Maybe Lily can answer this question that has popped up in my mind. What is it that we are satisfying or fulfilling, what negative motivation, when we hang on to our anger, frustration, gloominess, vengeful thoughts & musings & spread them about like a dark, cloudy mist upon others? Those of us, God’s children know what the Scriptures say about the Beatitudes, as you have enumerated for us, but what craving is being fed that some constantly mope, gripe, criticize, or oppose at every turn. It NEVER works, even if we try it for the gazillionth time. What great charge does one receive when his/her demeanor is so negative?

    1. I think we all have a great longing in the depths of our soul. It can only be filled by knowing the depth and height and the width and length of God’s Love. Eph 3:18.

Those ugly dark attitudes that you mentioned in your HAHA will come into the light (according to Galatians 5:22:23 MSG) when we live God’s way.” He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard-things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity.”

As I said misery loves company but so does serenity and exuberance about life love company of like mind.

I’m sure others have much more insight into this.

Note from Sara’s journal: “Most of the basic truths of life sound absurd at first hearing.” Elizabeth Goudge… and she also wrote “…suddenly Easter in your soul, though it be midwinter. Something, you do not know what, has broken the seal upon that door in the depth of your being that opens upon eternity.”

“Eternity, is Light and Light is Jesus and Jesus is freedom. Jesus gives us love from the depth of His being and at times it is just too big for us since our depth is not yet void of fear and other debri that clutter our beings. Prayer unlocks the truth and cleans out the debri for peace and serenity to meet.” Sara

      1. YES! I see what you are saying about the fulfilling of a GOD-SIZED crater within our hearts that can only be filled by knowing Him. So our seedy substitutes of “impowering anger” or brittleness, or sharpness feigning authority are shabby imitations of the true power of knowing the living God. And yet, we somehow pretend and even opt for these substitutes thinking they will work for us. They NEVER do.
I love what you said about the Gifts that God brings into our lives when we live for Him….like..”fruit appears in an Orchard”.
        Thanks for your insight.

      2. Blessed/Happy are those who hunger and thirst for Righteousness for they shall be filled……isnt this the longing also for the fruit you are speaking of in the orchard-things, to be found in other people as well as oneself…..?dj

  4. Oh, this is good stuff Sara! I’ve heard that it takes less muscles to smile, than to frown. I’d like to share some scriptures from Proverbs.
Proverbs 15:13 “A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.”
Proverbs 16:30 “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health.”
Proverbs 17:22 “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”

    1. The wise man of Proverbs sure knew how to ascertain “The Lord’s Prayer”, ” Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:19)..God gives the medicine and we take it.

Ivan Parker sings “I Can Only Imagine” I can only imagine What it will be like When I walk By Your side I can only imagine What my eyes will see When Your face Is before me I can only imagine …

Wisdom tell us like Prov 17:22 Be cheerful in your mind/character because it is good for your health, but if you walk around in gloom and doom you are going to be bone tired.

It is what you think about you will become!

By the way Needles, do you like giving shots? Thanks for the shot of ‘Joy of Health!’

This brings to my mind now the many prayer request that we have for those that are sick in body. May they even now receive the love, mercy and grace of God’s healing plan for their lives. Amen

  5. A reminder from God of putting on happiness may come from God in different forms. For instance, Saturday morning I was awoken by a banging/thud on my den windows. I ran to the window and saw a tiny blue bird with a red chest repeatedly trying to get it. I was concerned that the bird would harm himself, but he didn’t. I thought, God must have sent a blue bird of happiness to remind me that He is the way to happiness and not the world.
When my Father died my Mom was so sad that one day she thought she saw something from her kitchen window. She climbed up on a chair and looked below and saw a rainbow hovering over her flower garden. She told me then she was reminded to be happy even in her sorrow for God surely had not forgotten her.
We certainly thank God for all his promises to us in the Bible and for his individual touches to each individual to remind them of how much He loves them.
