Bible Puzzle

Subject: A Bible Puzzle

Someone sent us this on an email. Not sure anyone knows the answer or if there is an answer. What do you think?

God made Adam out of dust, but thought it best to make me first. So
I was made before the man, according to God’s holy plan. My whole
body God made complete – without arms, hands, or feet. My ways
and acts did God control, but in my body, he placed no soul. A
living being I became, and Adam gave me a name. Then from His presence I withdrew and for this man, Adam I never knew. All my maker’s laws I do obey, and from these laws I never stray. Thousands of miles I go in fear but seldom on the earth appear. Later for a purpose God did see, to place a living soul in me. But that soul of mine God did claim and from me took it back again. And when this soul from me had fled, I was the same as when first made, without legs, arms, feet, or soul, I travel on from pole to pole. My labors are from day to night and to men I once furnished light. Thousands of people, both young and old, did my death bright lights behold. Not right or wrong can I conceive, the Bible and its teachings, I believe. The fear of death doesn’t trouble me. Pure happiness I will never see. And up in Heaven I can never go, nor in the grave or hell below.

This puzzle was written by a lady in California in 1890 in response
to a gentleman in Philadelphia, who said he would pay $1000 to
anyone who could write a puzzle he could not solve. He failed to
do so and paid her $1000 (a great sum of money at that time).
The answer is one word, five letters long, and appears only four times in the Bible. An eight year old boy figured out the puzzle.
Can you?

I am a novice writer and painter who loves to be creative. I love singing but can't sing without a hymnal, except for children's songs. I love to make up my own songs and love the old hymns. I love to garden and got that love from my Mom and Dad who taught be everything I know from planting to harvesting to canning. I'm happy gardening, walking with my pug, JD Sir Winston Churchill, painting, and crafting. I love to spend Saturday's sitting in my rocker going through a bible study. I love working with elementary school aged children and seeing them use their creative gifts. I have taught Sunday school for a number of years and taught in the public schools for 18 years. I might say I'm retired but I spend most of my time subbing and enjoy it immensely. The kids spark my own creativeness.

    1. Well I thought it was Jesus along with (someone else)and I backed off the answer(chickened out) because it says it only appeared 4 times and Jesus is seen more than that….dj

  1. RENA, this is giving us hours of fun and study. We are not sure we agree with you but not sure we don’t?

Will continue to search or I should say, guess.

  2. I tried to really read and think this puzzle through…is it Satan? I based my guess on these scriptures
    Lk 4;4-13,Mark 8:33,Genisis3, Rev 20;10, Isa.14;1-15….dj

    1. If he had no arms, legs, or feet, he could be the snake/Devil/Satan which are all five letters. He certainly will have no happiness and into the Lake of Fire he shall go.

    2. Was my first thought? Did the word snake appear in the KJV?

I also thought it was ‘death’. What do you think of this?

      1. I went on blueletterbible.org and they said there were no entries for snake and that there are 372 entries for death. That’s a lot more than four. I’d like to know the 8-year old’s answer. O.K. eight year olds what do you think?

  3. What is one word and five letters that only appeared in the King James Version four times.

Adam, God made out of dust but thought it best to make me first, so I was made before man to answer God’s most holy plan.

A living being I became and Adam gave to me my name. I from his presence then withdrew and more of Adam never knew.

I did my Maker’s law obey nor ever went from it astray. Thousands of miles I go in fear but seldom on earth appear.

Hint: For purpose wise which God did see, He put a living soul in me. A soul from me God did claim. And took from me the soul again.

Hint: And when from me the soul had fled, I was the same as when first made. And without hands, or feet, or soul, I travel on from pole to pole.

I labor hard by day, by night. To fallen men I give great light. Thousands of people, young and old will by my death great light behold.

No right or wrong can I conceive. The scripture I cannot believe, although my name therein if found. They are to me an empty sound.

No fear of death doth trouble me, real happiness I will never see. To heaven I shall never go or to hell below.

Now when these lines you slowly read, go search your Bible with all speed; for that my name is written there, I do honestly to you declare.

The answer is one word and appears only 4 times in the King James Version of the Bible.

  4. I KNOW IM A BIT LATE ON THIS ONE. AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH I THINK I HAVE THE ANSWER. THE ONLY WORD THAT APPEARS IN THE BIBLE FOUR TIMES IS WHALE.

    1. I applied WHALE to the clues given and by gum!!!! Jersey may have it RIGHT!!! See what being from JERSEY does for the ol’ noggin’? Does anyone see anything in the clues that goes against the answer Jersey gave, WHALE?????

      1. Where are the four times in the Bible? Give us the scriptures 4 times and I will believe.

      2. THE WORD “WHALE” APPEARS 4 TIMES.
DEPENDING ON THE VERSION THE WORD SOMETIMES IS TRANSLATED INTO DRAGON OR SEA MONSTOR THIS IS IN THE OLD TESTIMENT. IT HAS ALSO BEEN REFERRED AS TO CROCCODIALE. EXCUSE MY SPELLING BUT THAT IS MY WEAKNESS. I HAVE TOLD NEEDLES EINSTEIN COULDN’T SPELL AND HE WAS A GENIOUS. HERE WE GO THIS IS FOUND IN THE KING JAMES BIBLE. I HAVE A CATHOLIC BIBLE SO MY VERSION DOES NOT REFLECT THE WORD “WHALE” BUT THAT VERSION DOES.
        JOB 7..12
        MATTHEW 12..40
        GENESIS 1..21
        EZEKIEL 32..2
I WENT TO A CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL AND WE HAD TO LEARN “RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD” ALSO READ FROM MANY OF BIBLES AND VARIOUS RELIGIOUS MATERIAL. I DID ASK FOR A BIT OF HELP ON THIS QUIZ BUT IT WAS NOT EASY FINDING THE ANSWER. HOWEVER I ASSURE YOU THAT GOD WAS PLEASED WITH MY PERSERVERENCE WITH FINDING THE ANSWER.

      3. crocodile |Л?krГ¤kЙ™ЛЊdД«l| noun 1 a large predatory semiaquatic reptile with long jaws, long tail, short legs, and a horny textured skin, using submersion and stealth to approach prey unseen. The crocodile has been extensively hunted for its valuable skin. • Family Crocodylidae: three genera, in particular Crocodylus, and several species.

I kind of believe you just might have the answer. But, why does crocodile has short legs? I read all the Bibles you mentioned including “The New Jerusalem” which says in Job “And I the Sea, or some sea monster.”Job 7:12 I found whale twice but I will agree about the others. But, I still wonder about the legs?

      4. I DONT KNOW. THE REFRENCE TO THE “CROCK” WAS IN MY CATHOLIC STUDY BIBLE. SEA MONSTOR MAKES MORE SENSE.
