That is a tough question but as a Christian, the only time I think that honesty is NOT the best policy is in a situation where the Facts go against the TRUTH of God’s Word. For Example: the facts quote the doctor’s report that says that the patient is going to die. But the WORD of GOD’s truth says: “By His stripes you are healed” Sometimes the honest facts go against the TRUTH OF THE WORD. In that case it’s better to tell the TRUTH than to tell the Facts.
I may be wrong but I think there are times when a person should not be honest. As an example: I may be mistaken in my understanding of the story of Rahab, but in Joshua 2 I read that Rahab was not honest in her response to the men sent by the King of Jericho to search out the two spies of Israel. She said she did not know where the men went when actually she had hidden them in order to protect them.
She was commended for her faith and belief in God in Heb 11:31 and James 2:25.
I found this question on a calendar from an elementary school. Not sure if it was meant for students or teachers, but it dosen’t matter. Because it is too deep for me.
I thought about it for a few days and I could only believe one has to be true to “ones self.”
I understand that I need to know myself and those that I am in relationship with and this is a major big job. Just a few of the many scriptures I have studied to try and see if I could answer from my heart.
Passage Matthew 10:38:
38And he who does not take up his cross and follow Me [[a]cleave steadfastly to Me, conforming wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also] is not worthy of Me.
Deut 25
You shall be blameless [and absolutely true] to the Lord your God.
You shall not have in your house or bag true and false measures, a large and a small.
1 Kings 8:61 (Whole Chapter) _Let your hearts therefore be blameless and wholly true to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as today.
Psalm 19:9 _The [reverent] fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
Acts 8:21 _You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is all wrong in God’s sight [it is not straightforward or right or true before God]. [Ps 78:37 ]
1 John 1:9 _If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].
Please explain further your answer as to being true to one’s self in that our hearts are desperately wicked…despite ourselves as we strive to follow the command of the LORD. We have a hard time confoming to the WORD and so “MY SELF” is rather a rogue in actions and deeds and must be reeled in constantly to CONFORM to the WORD. In many instances we LOVE our “SELF” but do not much LIKE it. So help us to understand…that famous quote ….’to thine own self (heart) be true”. Unless we are following the VOICE of HOLY SPIRIT…in most instances I am not sure I would want to be true to that “Self” spirit.

Does this mean we have to believe and have faith and stand by what we quote and say?

as I believe Rahab was being true to herself. She believed in God and faith and was commended even to this day for it.

I agree with you and I believe we all know the consquences of lies and how God feels about them. Therefore, it is what we feel about ourselves.
It is a great point to discuss and learn more about.
