I had to write a poem about the I Have a Dream speech for a contest and this is what I wrote.
It is called This is Our New Life.
My brothers and sisters black and white
They did not give up without a fight
So everyone I see
Would soon be free
Look around for the blank pages to be found
With the discoveries it will see
You never know what is next for you and me
No one knew here today
Everyone would be free with every say
No one is picking cotton their whole life
Or doing another persons dos their whole life
Kids can have friends
Black and white again
My brother or sister black or white
Are not at any fight
Just holding hands
With all my friends
That was the dream
That is our NEW life
I hope you liked it!
With Faith,
Grace

I more than liked it Grace, I loved/love it…this is something that all can be thankful for this thanksgiving..the freedom…to have friends of different nationalities, and colors…and to be able to even worship Jesus freely in this nation together as your poem says “with all my friends”…what a wonderful poem Grace, thank you for sharing it….Dorothy
Dearest Grace, You are truly free!!! Whom Jesus sets free is free indeed. Your insight and compassion and understanding are very advanced for your young age. You are truly a free “woman”, free in spirit, free in thought and free in The LORD.
Keep up the great work. You are the legacy, the realization of those who have gone before you and have fought for this freedom. AND you, my dear, are truly liberated for you know who you are in our Lord and Savior Jesus. And your writings prove it.!! WOW!
This is a good poem and I like it very much. The message in your poem seems to express something in your heart that makes me sing the song, “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red and yellow black and white, they are precious in His sight…Jesus loves the little children of the world.” Thank you for sharing your writings and this speech.
Grace, your insight makes me think of Jesus and His love for all the peoples of the world. We read of this in John 3:16
Such a timely time to post your article with the following news in Washington DC today:
“CBS/AP) President Bush, appearing at a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for a memorial honoring slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said National Mall monument will “preserve his legacy for ages.”
Under overcast skies, Mr. Bush joined former President Clinton and a host of civil rights figures and members of Congress to celebrate the monument to be built not far from where King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. “
Thank you for a beautiful poetic verse. Holding hands and accepting people is a character trait we all aspire to. You have it Grace, and I’m so blessed to have you as a student who is already walking in the future of freedom, acceptance, and joy. Have a blessed day and keep running with the torch proclaiming freedom – no captives here – only those who are free.
Thank you Mrs. O for all your kind words! You are truely an amazing teacher! Your joy helps me get through the day!
With Faith and Joy,
Grace
Hey Guys. I am a finalist in the House of Blues contest with this poem! My parents, friends, and Mrs. O, of course will be going to the House of Blues on the 13th to hear me read my poem. I had to tell you!
Congratulations! Best to you in you in your reading. Keep us posted!
Grace, I am glad you wrote to tell us of your accomplishment in being selected to read your poem. God bless all your efforts!
Grace, I am so very proud that you are reading that poem and so many people are already reading it now, but to actually hear the artist who wrote it read it herself truely will be a blessing to all who hear…I know they will hear the love…and the passion behind it…they will hear Jesus in you coming through …..Mrs Dorothy
They have discernd the Spirit of God in your poem. That always draws people to the Lord. Jesus said, “no man comes to the Father unless the Spirit draws him to the Father.” You have drawn people by your noble work in this poem and your purity of heart and we wish you the very best in your presentation of it. May the Lord bless you and may even many more people be drawn to our FATHER through your poetry and writings, now and in the future.
Congratulations and blessings!
Dear Grace,
What an honor and privilege it was to hear your read this poem at the House of Blues in New Orleans. You stood so tall and spoke with such conviction as your head barely could be seen from the potium. Your youth was not noticed in your words and you held your own with the 16 and 17 years old. I know this message was a message from the heart and that your walk with Jesus leads you to such convictions. Congratulations!!!! I hope you find a wonderful place to put the beautiful piece of art work you received and have fun spending your gift certificate at Barnes and Noble.
Super job Grace. Congratulations on winning the Middle School Division Award.
Congratulations Grace again. God is just pouring forth so many blessings upon you. This is so encouraging for all of us. Ms. O, your teacher and your parents and friends have to be just s0000000000000 proud of your outstanding accomplishments.
