Some years ago I wrote this song and I have been going around singing it recently. It has a marching beat to give you an up and go attitude.
A friend of mine once told me to Jan-Feb. Her idea of this was jam all your indoor work into January and February so when the first signs of spring show up in March outdoors one could go. I think it a pretty neat idea but I am not much on this indoor drudgery work for two long months of cold weather with snow and ice. I have been singing and trying to stay in the now and appreciate the beauty of the snow. Well, that is the way it is in my area. How is the weather in your area?
Chorus:
Go forth, go forth ye servants of Zion!
Take every thought of your mind captive
And the battle of the bulge will go away
And the battle of the bulge will go away.
1. If theres a weakness in your body,
Declare it strong by the Spirit of the Lord.
Arise and walk away without regret
Not even glancing back to see defeat.
O just keep right on with your walking
And you will see your victory every day.
(chorus)
2. Victory is not a one time experience,
But daily in the life of the saints
If this seems impossible to you
Then pick up the sword of the Spirit
And make it a moment by moment experience.
(chorus)
3. When you see the battle of the bulge appearing
The process starting all over again
Make sure the remedies are not your idols—
Exercise! Diet! Health food, psychological testing; and even
Good old vitamins are enemies in the hands of an idol maker.
(chorus)
4. Make sure your heart is pure and holy
And your hands are as spotless as can be
That your vocation is not an idol maker
Get you thoughts and actions in line with your King
And you will be an overcomer to fight the Battle of the Bulge.
(chorus)

Thank you for creating this wonderful song to overcome the enemy of our lives. I will start singing it as it seems Satan is always showing on the horizon causing your emotions to get out of whack and your focus to be shakened. The scripture says in Isa 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. We therefor will get out our mighty prayer swords daily. May we get our thoughts and actions in line with the King daily and be an overcomer. May we not look back, but keep walking foreward with Jesus! Lord Jesus cause each of us on the Daily Lily to be overcomers! Amen!
To me this song is a prescription for health in body, mind and spirit. I appreciate the part that tells us to “keep right on with your walking” (even when I don’t feel like it!). There are many references in the Bible telling us not only to walk but how to walk ( Rom 13:13; Gal 5:16; Eph 5:2; Eph 5:8, etc). It is a daily fight to discipline your mind, but this song is an encouragement to me that it is possible and that we can see the victory.
Sometimes I have to give my faith a surge of renewal with this song and a story from one of the Bible characters that seemed to have needed a surge as well, like Ananias.
Gary has been teaching from the book of Acts for the last month or so and this past Sunday he spoke of Paul and Ananias. I was thinking what kind of faith did Ananias need to open his home to that Saul/Paul character that was only known as one wanting to wreck havoc on and persecute the believers in Jesus. Ananias gets a vision of all things to take blind Saul/Paul in his home and give him his sight back. Oh, well I guess maybe it is not to good to Jan-Feb as my friend suggested. I could use that for an excuse not to open my home to strangers or better yet, just not believe in visions. (too much pizza excuse).
I think of President Bush wanting to give our military in Iraq a surge of renewal and I pray for a vision and peace in this region. I am very mindful and repectful of remembering the “BATTLE of the BULGE” (WWII) December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945 where over 75000 Americans were killed, maimed, or captured at The Battle of The Bulge not to mention many others of other nations.
Men/Women of Faith with Vision can sure change history and renew our faith. Let us walk on with vision and faith and “The Battle of the Bulge” will go away. We sing often another scripture song from Zechariah 4:6 …”Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, Says the Lord of host, vs. 7 Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!…with shouts of Grace, grace to it.”
this song really helps one to see that even the small things that are used to aid in helping if not used in order..they can be added to the Battle of the Bulge too!..some times it is needed to be reminded to walk by faith and vision…vision: something seen in a dream, trance, b; an object of imagination c; a manifestation to the senses of something immaterial. 2; unusual discernment of foresight b; the special sense by which the qualities of an object constitution its appearance are perceived and which is mediated by the eye.,,something seen….(websters ninth new collegiate dictionary)…,Youre right Sara…Its by following the Holy Spirit and being obedient to Him…He shows us tells us and if we are willing to see and do according to His order…the Battle of the Bulge goes away….If Saul/Paul and Ananias werent obedient to the detailed instructions and followed the order Paul might still be Saul and still blind…Grace Grace…they must have shouted ?….they had to of known the impact on all the generations their actions would have to some degree…I think of the Daily Lily and all the writings that are on it I can only imagine the effect on the generations that read these pages…O the Faith O the Hope and O the Love…(and the Help)…dj
“BATTLE OF THE BULGE” song…A prescription,(RX) for mental health and emotional healing. Sometimes we are not even aware that we are making these things, vitamins, exercise, our jobs, into our idols. But I was reading in Leviticus 4, this morning that when a congregation or an individual sinned, unknowingly or through ignorance and though un- aware that what they were doing was a sin, still they were held accountable and adjudged guilty. And when they were made aware that they had sinned, propitiation, atonement had to be made for them by the priest by a sacrifice to the Lord for them to attain forgiveness for that sin.
Sometimes we are so into a “good” thing that we fail to see it is usurping the place of our lovely Lord in our lives. So as the song urges us to do,let us purify our hearts and hands before the Lord and ask forgiveness for those transactions that we overlook each day and are hardly aware of; let us get our thoughts and actions in line with the KING. And the Battle that bulges our minds and tilts them askew…..that battle will go away.
This past weekend there was a planning session for a trip to Uganda to help the students and teachers in that area in July. I thought of this song over and over again. The Battle of Bulge seems to always bulge up when you go forth to share your talents that God has given and to represent and share the Lord. Lord we pray that we will recognize the “Bulge” for what it is and walk on, just walk on for there is much for us to do. May our thoughts line up with that of the King and may blessings fall upon that great nation. May those that have been called walk on with Jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May we each answer the trumpet call of our Lord!!!!!
I agree in prayer with you that each of you will know your gift and the size of your gift and each will see their gift open like a rose from a bud created to show full blown. I pray that each team member will know and understand their work whether it be work with children, assist others, teach women, or serve in some other way. But, each one will know their work and serve the work to the fullness.
You are right about this song and it’s wonderful medicinal health-giving ointment. Proberbs 15:30 “…good news gives health to the bones.”
Psalm 121:8 May the Lord guard each of you as you come and go as a team both now and forever.
Sara,
This is a wonderful blog. I know I need to battle the bulge. This is very encouraging. We must stay postive and sing praises to our Lord. We must work hard everyday as if we were working for the Lord. We must as clean up our homes and get ready for the Spring. Let our spirits bloom just like the flowers and the trees. Thank you Sara
