A SEA OF IDENTITY

ID, show your ID. Do you have your ID? Many of us are asked this each time we go to work. When we go to the bank, write a check or conduct just about any kind of business. Basically, our ID identifies our name, and sometimes shows our picture and other pertinent information related to identifying us.

How many times have you heard yourself, spouse, children or co-workers say “I am afraid I am losing my identity.” We are usually meaning individuality, personality, character, uniqueness, or ourselves in some way, we think and feel certain, that we know about ourselves. We even marry at times to make a sea of identity for ourselves. Our children whether it be good or bad will at times strike accord with others to believe and declare they have identified us, their parents. And, yes, even our Nation can at times identify us.

Another most interesting one is when we are mistakenly identified as someone else. Might be humorous or flattering if someone in just passing, thinks and yells, AH, you look like some famous person and especially one that we might admire. But, that comment turns another raging color when it could cause us lots of legal or other bothersome problems.

One of the most baffling scriptures to me is when the seven sons of Sceva along with some itinerant Jewish exorcists decided to call the name of the Lord over one who had evil spirits. They had just heard and watched the Apostle Paul at work with his true identity. Paul spoke and laid hands on many and the sick were healed and the evil spirits went out of their bodies. The Jewish exorcists and Sceva’s sons finds when they used a fake ID copied from Paul, the evil spirit speaks to them and demands they show their true ID in order to enter the work zone. The man says, Jesus I know, Paul, I know, but WHO ARE YOU! In my mind this might just make one drop in the sea of identity. And it did. “The possessed man went berserk—jumped the exorcists, beat them up, and tore off their clothes. Naked and bloody, they got away as best they could.” (Matthew 19:11-16 Message)

A Sea of Identity! Just who are we? We really should know and show our true identity at all times.
1 Peter 2:9,10 NLTYou are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people.”

1 Peter 2:1-3 So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.”

A Sea of Identity! Our identity is like the sea so expansive it stretches beyond our own thoughts and imagination. You can see its beginning but not its end. For it sweeps across a span of space but yet it stops and the boundaries are set for one to identify. There are times when the sea rages with a personality unknown to the human heart like that of the recent Tsunami.

A Sea of Identity! As we pause and meditate on our identity in the resurrection, life after death, one might wonder, what will it be like? We reach back into our passage from I Peter…” Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people.” God has given us an identity and the scripture is clear that God is love and that the identity He has given us will not be blotted out. Only our sins will be or have been blotted out, if we allow Him to blot them out. Isaiah 43:25 We believe by faith there is a connection between are identity today and our identity after death. Identity has a beginning but we cannot see the end.

Peter answers again for us. “…you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation.” Our identity, our self, our soul, continues to grow as we crave the pure spiritual milk. This will lead us into a maturity of true identity.

A Sea of Identity! My prayer for each of us is that we will seek truth, let truth untwine our mixed emotions, bring forth a purity in heart, soul and spirit. May our ID make a way for peace in the world. May we have confidence in our hope in Christ Jesus and the identity He has put around our neck to wear and show love with gladness and singleness of heart to a world that will hopefully desire to identify with us as we identify with YOU, our great Sea of Identity!
I hope that you will find, know, and show your ID today! Be a Bridge for the world by showing a
SEA OF IDENTITY!

  1. What an indepth, thought-provoking blog! One thing I can see from this is that trying to copycat someone like the Sceva sons did Paul proves disastrous. They obviously didn’t know themselves or their identity but it is interesting that someone else did. The demons saw right through their lack of authenticity and exposed them thrn beat up on them. You are giving us a formula with I Pet 2:1 for how to discover our true identity. We have to get rid of the muddy water in our lives so we can see our true reflection in its clear purity. I like the verse in Phil 3:8-9 that says…”that I may gain Christ and be found in Him…”. This says to me that I will find my ID in Him and in His character of love as you say above. That’s what should mold me…not the things you mentioned above that form some other sea of identity. Ever since studying your book ‘Dance of Healing’,Sara, I have been in pursuit of really knowing my authentic self (which is what the book is all about). I pray the prayer from it which says, “May I never again try to fit into molds made by the enemy of my soul.” I want to have my valid ID.

  2. In some ways one’s identity always stays the same. I.e at a 25th high school reunion when your classmates say, “you haven’t changed a bit.” Even though your hair is gray or gone and you can’t wear the blue jeans you wore then. In other ways your identity is always changing. You are not the person you were ten or five or even one year ago. You have changed. Even when you don’t want to change you change. Hopefully the changes in your identity are changes you have sought and have not been caused by the mere passing of time.

As you change and your identity changes you may look the same outwardly(maybe a little worn) but inwardly in the core of you, you are changing. If unplanned you become squeezed by the waves of life. You become cynical, boring, predictable and stale. All the money and energy you spend on the external you is in vain. A vibrant living you comes forth as you exercise your soul and spirit.

When diligent in renewing your mind and spirit, you are glad to face the day. Each day is a great day to be alive for you are excited about the challenges and the opportunities that will mold your identity. Do you want to be identified as an old stale worn out crust of bread? Or do you want to be identified as a fresh living vibrant living stream of life? You chose and you act to become the you, you want to be identified as.

  3. As I was reading and re-reading these remarks, amazingly, my eyes fell on a set of notes laying near the computer, that had been taken from a teaching heard some time ago. They said, “Whomever you ID with you become. You become what you behold, (and again), what you believe identifies you.”
Proverbs 23:7a says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Debi pointed this out above, and I add; if the demons had no trouble identifying the lack of authority in the seven sons, most certainly The LORD has no problem in identifying those whose hearts are true and those who are giving lip service. For “out of the abundance of the Heart, the mouth speaks.”(Mat. 12:34)
Jesus demonstrated this principle in Luke 9:55 when He rebuked the disciples for wanting to call down fire upon those who had rejected Jesus. He said, “You know not what spirit you are of!”
So, the spirit of the person will eventually ID itself out of the words of its own mouth, whether for good or for evil.

  4. As an annex to the above, I found this on the blogroll Freedom Folks from VDare.com and I thought it somewhat pertinent and quite true.
“If an individual displays unethical behavior in one situation, you are almost guaranteed that he will display it in another. It borders on the axiomatic.” V/Dare

  5. In answer to Sara’s question, “Debi, have you found your authentic self?” Yes, I believe I have found my authentic self. The find has come after years of following Sara’s teachings and Biblical counsel and going through her workbooks and attending her retreats such as ‘The Dance of Healing’. Satan tried to divide, hide and even destroy my ‘self’ through circumstances outside of my control and by my own wrong decisions (sin)that were within my power to choose.
I have discovered that I am a ‘singing farmer’. God called me to Agriculture many years ago but it took years for those gifting seeds to develop and for God to mold me so I could recognize and function in what I truly am. Step 1 in ‘Dance of Healing’ was a connector for me when I first studied it. I quote: “Ps. 46…Be still and know that I am God…I will be exalted in the earth. I plant flowers and trees all over the earth…Come and behold my works! I am a safe place to hide and ready to help when you need Me. Use your mind’s eye to visualize God’s Garden, flowers and trees all over the earth.”
When I beheld this character trait of God I saw and began to become who I was (much like what MG said above ‘what you behold you become’). I struggled with being a copy-cat…a fake ID because of my insecurities and fears. Slowly I became true to myself and embraced my real loves and strengths that God had placed within me. ‘He was there all the time and I never knew it'(quote from ‘Dance’). Practically speaking, I love to teach about plants, look at plants, grow plants, design with plants. I have a drive in me to beautify the earth and bring beauty and healing to other’s lives through plants. God made me ‘sporty’ and gave me a physical body of strength and energy for the job. He also gave me an ability and desire to sing to Him and to others and allowed me to make my first CD (see under ‘Gardening Therapy’).
My authentic self still needs healing, repairs and maintenance and there’s more to polish and grow. At times the enemy of my soul tries to get me to sidetracked and fit into one of his molds (as ‘Dance of Healing’ says in Ch V) such as fear, depression, worry and unfocus. But comments of exhortation such as Sara’s blog above “I Peter 2: 1-3 Get rid of ALL evil behavior” jolt me back to the right road and I cry out for mercy and grace, ‘admit it, face it and change it’, as she says, and He helps. Thanks Daily Lily for what you have provided me. Thanks Sara and all your teaching for helping me to find my true ID.

  6. this is very deep because to have a true ID and be of good use one needs to have the ID God intended from the foundations of the world and that can only be recieved through and from Christ Jesus…… Sara I recieve that prayer you prayed and I pray with you that all will be a Bridge for the world….It says in Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me……Like the song written by Gwen R. Shaw(1980 of End-Time Handmaidens,)…Let the Love of My God shine through me. Let the beauty of Jesus men see. Let the pattern of the Son be the one, the only one That men will see in me…….your words paint such deeeeep pictures but I causes my heart to search….dj

  7. I was wondering: If “we exercise all the gifts God has given us; if we use our gifts to help others because it makes us feel good; if we like the pats and praise of a job well done in the area of our giftings; if we work very hard and do our “religious” best BUT: if we are apprehensive, anxious, tense, MOODY, withdrawn, uncommunicative with one another…well then, which one is REALLY OUR AUTHENTIC SELF?
Paul writes in 1 Cor 13:…” Though I speak with the tongues of angels and have not LOVE, I am like a sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and gigantic faith to move mountains but don’t have love, I am nothing. I can give all my worldly goods to the poor and offer to be martyred. BUT IF I DON’T HAVE LOVE it profits me NOTHING! Charity, Love, suffers long…is not impatient when things don’t go its way” …or if IT disagrees with a brother or sister or someone who doesn’t “catch on” as quickly as IT thinks they should. Love, the necessary part of every gifting, every calling, every anointing must be a vital, living part of that person, or that “gifted” one is a phony.
Paul says in 1 COR. 14:8….”if the trumpet, the “PROCLAIMER” gives an uncertain sound, who will be prepared to the fore?” Who will believe us if our giftings seem magical but we are myopic, seeing only whom or what we want to see?
Jesus said in Matthew 6:44: “But I say unto you, ‘Love your enemies, bless them that persecute you, do good to them who hate you, oppose you, or disagree with you…that you may be children of the heavenly Father…46: For if you love them that love you or (love only the lovely and eschew the rest)
    there is NO reward.
Therein lies the rub. Authenticity emerges where NO MATTER WHAT A PERSON IS DOING there is LOVE right there; in your gifting, out of your gifting, aside from your gifting, the AUTHENTIC SELF is the one who is THE LOVER.

  8. “if we are apprehensive, anxious, tense, MOODY, withdrawn, uncommunicative with one another…well then, which one is REALLY OUR AUTHENTIC SELF?” MG

I would think your words which I quoted above would be the authentic self? What do yo think?

  9. Yes! I agree, wholeheartedly, with you. Paul attests to it in his epistle in the Chapter quoted above, 1 Cor. 13. So, what can we do about it? “Name it! face it; admit it; change it.” {(c) S.M.} Change it, change it, change it!! AND, If we don’t change it, it’s because we LIKE it. We LOVE it. We think it works for us and we deceive ourselves. It’s comfortable because it’s (scarily) our authentic self. And if we LOVE it then we don’t really Love God. We love ourselves! And we cannot serve two masters.
How hard is it to give it up? Is it because we love ourselves more than Christ Who died on the cross for us so that we don’t have to be enslaved to our stinky, authentic self, but find the AUTHENTICITY OF CHRIST IN US, THE HOPE OF GLORY.???
We must CHANGE it even if it “kills us”. Some of us shouldn’t be talking about this at this stage in our relationship with Christ. Like Paul said, LET US LEAVE THESE ELEMENTARY THINGS, NOW, AND GO ON TO GREATER THINGS OF THE SPIRIT.”

  10. This morning I found a scripture which fits this indepth teaching. It is found in Romans 12. …Take your everyday, ordinary life-your sleeping, eating, going to work, and walking around life- and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develps well formed maturity in you. It went on to say Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil, hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who live deeply; practice playing second fiddle.

After listening on tape to the book “Wrinkle in Time” by Madelleine L’Engle I know that we do not want to be in a rut and all appearing at our doors in rhythm or going through our life in rhythm with everyone else. We don’t want to be overtaken by the enemy represented by IT in the book, nor do we want to even approach the dark side. May we all use what we have with counsel to help others be set free which can only be accomplished with the Love of Jesus. Read the book and see what happens when you and LOVE reach out through your own weaknesses to accomplish something in Jesus’s name.

  11. I understand the IT in this children’s travel- time story is a disembodied brain who offers people complete security if they will only give up their freedom and their individuality.

Galatians 5:1 AMPL “IN [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].”

God is Love, therefore, love is God and God is the Word and The Word is truth and the truth will set you free. Seemly, at times we find our spiritual selves, our true identity, debating with our IT, brain that is disembodied from The Holy Spirit.

I find that we so often refuse to acknowledge our own identity. I have often suggested that one take a tape recorder with them all day and record all they say.Play it back and ‘write out your identity of the day.’ I have tried it and still recommend IT. With a play on words I can surely say you might be arguing with your IT. (maybe a better idea for now would be a video camera.) Vanity shows on camera and vanity will lose each and everytime to the IT.

  12. Growing up in the church and loving the church I have always understood that we identify another believer and ourselves by their spiritual gift(s) and the fruit of the spirit working and showing in their lives. I also have understood that these gifts are for the Body of Christ and we see them flourishing in a great array as we commit to the church and seek ways to use them so others in the Body can flourish. We are to know one another by the spirit and that would be in part to recognize their giftings, accept their giftings, pray for their giftings, and encourage their giftings.

I have listed here a list of the gifts, hopefully, will encourage each one of us to refresh our gifts and put them to use in an even greater way than we ever have. There is no limit to what God will and can do when our gifts are in unity and that takes the love of God. This is how I identy another and myself.

  13. Sara you have listed each ones ID badge right before us and The Holy Spirit is the one holding them out saying come take your ID badge that the Son of God bought for you with His own Blood. for you to use in His Kingdom the picture never looks bad on the ID badge…for the Father He sees you through the Son…so come…(I went through the Letters written in the Word and found that Paul really knew his indentity…he stated each letter by proclamining who he was….I paul and apostle of Jesus Christ,,,,I Paul a servant and apostle….I paul a prisoner of….Then James also knew his Identity…James a servant of God…Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ……..they knew who were and they word their ID badges all the time…when they spoke, wrote, worked…people knew who they were…even the demons knew who these ones were.) dj…I Dorothy a servant and ministry of helps of Jesus Christ….my badge,my ID

  14. As I read DJ’s excellent comments, I envisioned the Holy Spirit handing out the various ID’s, as she described it and as enumerated in Sara’s listing of the gifts. Then I thought!! NO one can ever forge a HOLY SPIRIT ID BADGE. We can try to fake it; use a forged “signature”; touch up the “photo” to look like a “saint”; we can give a contrived alibi; a phony address; a revved up geneology. But just like the sons of Sceva, SOMEONE will find us out. As was said before, usually the words of our mouths or the true intentions of our hearts will emerge and we’re “busted”!!
If we are “authentic”, the real ticket, then, as said earlier, it won’t make any difference which gift GOD has given us. We will ring true, like the tuning fork that always strikes the right pitch.

  15. Dorothy’s comment reminded me of Sara’s workshop/teaching series “The Four bees of Giftings” where she gave us steps on how to build an ‘Individual and Corporate Power Structure’ through the identifictaion and use of our gifts. Two quotes I love from this. The first reminded me of Dorothy’s ID badge: “You are unique, there is not another you.” The second reminded me of Sara’s exhortaion above to find and use our gifts: “Find your gift and use it…leave it hidden and lose it”. Great words of wisdom.

  16. As I was reading this blog I began thinking about my own ID. I was thinking about what Gary said, “You haven’t change a bit”. As we grow up our ID changes. We change from babies to children to pre-teens, to teenagers, to young adult, to mid-age adult, to old adult. Through lifes trials we change. We learn how to handle different situations through our experiences. When we get married our ID changes to wife or husband. When we have children our ID changes to mother or father. When we except Jesus as our savior, our ID changes to Christian. Our friends can also alter and change our ID. Change is not a bad thing. As we change we grow. A seed will never turn into a flower without change. So many times I have seen woman lose their husbands and not have a clue on how to survive. Some don’t know how to write a check to pay the bills or drive a car to get from place to place. Their ID was their husband’s wife. I think it’s important to have your own ID. I think it’s important to be able to stand on your own two feet and not get lost in someone elses ID. We aren’t promised that person will be here forever. What good are we doing for God’s kingdom if we don’t use our own ID. We need to take the gifts of our ID and exercise them and use them to the fullest to glorify God. The old saying IF YOU DON’T USE IT YOU’LL LOSE IT. This is true. If we don’t use our gifts, we’ll lose them. As we study God’s word and spend time with him daily, he will fine tone us to be the instrument that he wants us to be. We are all different. We are all important to our Lord. He has the hairs on your head numbered. I pray each day that God will keep changing my ID and allow me to strenghth my gifts to make me who he wants me to be. Paul had to do this with his ID too. The demons knew his ID and he had a strong foundation in God. Paul allowed God to change his ID as well. Saul the man who murdered Christians was changed to Paul the man who helped save Christians. God changed his ID. Acts 9:15 But the Lord said, “Go , for Saul is my chosen instrument to take the message to the Gentiles and to the kings, as well as to the people of Israel.”(NLT) Saul grew and changed his ID to Paul because he allowed God to work in his life. He exercised his gifts that God blessed him with and was fine tuned by God’s hand. His ID and gifts were so strong through God, even the demons knew him by name and knew they were no match for his gifts through our Lord. Lord please change my ID, stenghthen my gifts and fine tune my instument to help bring honor and glory to your kingdom.

  17. Wendy, I love the analogy you used for our ID, “A seed will never turn into a flower without change.”

While we change like the seed to flower, from Glory to Glory, we have an anchor to hold on to. Heb. 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today, and forever.” We get the idea from this scripture that He is always totally Himself. Which reminds us to be true to ourselves.

I appreciate your gift of exhortation and teaching. Thank you for sharing your gift with us at The Daily Lily. You are very special and unique.

  18. Wendy, I love what you have written. Perhaps, derived from what you said above, people “dry up” because they resist change; sometimes important change. But not just a change in the environment or in technology, or climate or marital, parental or occupational change but they resist the Change needed to Grow and Go, as Sara pointed out, from glory to glory. Once we receive the Lord and have made that initial, breathtaking, cleansing change, we must go on from there. There will be new challenges to our spiritual life. There are no plateaus where one can safely camp out and think that this is comfy and I’ll just hang out here. I’ve made it and surely God has noticed what I did a couple of years ago and I can make it on my ID concerning that. I am afraid the answer to that is, either change of go backwards. . We either ‘go and flow” or “slack and backtrack”. There is no “Status quo” in Kingdom Economics.

  19. Wendy as I was reading your ID comment, I thought about what you said concerning using our gifts. And me, being the plant person I am, was drawing correlations between your comments on gifts and the seed turning into the flower. Everyday now I walk through the greenhouse at school and observe the spring bedding plant growth. Just two weeks ago the marigolds were in the dark in seed packs clearly labeled ‘Marigold’, waiting to be sown. A week later the seeds were swelling and the root and shoot were emerging as they had been planted and watered and placed in warm light. The label on the flat of these seeds read ‘Marigold’. Today the seedlings were up and running, about to be transplanted to a new place. Their ID label still said the same thing…’Marigold.’ By mid-April they will be beautifully blooming and customers will take this ‘Marigold’ home to plant in their flower pots …a gift of joy for many to behold. Other’s will use them at garden’s edge to keep bugs away as their pyrethrin oils are a natural insect repellant. And when fall’s first hard frost comes, their heads will be a drooping brown, full of seeds for next years generation. Some plant collector will gather these seeds, put them in an envelope and write on it ‘Marigold.’ How markedly different each identifying stage of this ‘Marigold’ has been…yet a constant remains unchanged…it was, is and is to come a ‘Marigold.’
And the ‘Pumpkin’ seems born to shine in its gifting from infancy to old age. It’s edible seeds nourish and feed many. The beauty of its bloom provides bees with nectar. And its fleshy fruit makes us happy with pies and soups and breads. Even its lantern lights the way for trick-or treaters. No stage of its ID is despised or belittled, though each is so distinctly ‘Pumpkin.’
Thanks Wendy for writing and getting me thinking about change. Plants seem to illustrate a lot of spiritual truths and examples to live by.

  20. Great Analogies on Pumpkin Seeds and Marigolds, Debi. I like what you said, that no one aspect or “season” of the seeds stages is small, belittled or unimportant. That has great application to the life-span of the “man” of God. Like Sara quoted, “from glory to glory”!

  21. Friday afternoon I was explaining to Debi a vision I had while driving through town doing my errands early in the day. When I arrived home Chickenfarmer had made a comment on this blog that confirmed my vision in my mind.

“A seed will never turn into a flower without change.”

The vision I had was the biblical principal in the life of a believer or church when they are discipling others.

We start with a new class and they grow and thieve while the teacher and helpers spend much time and resources watching over and helping the process until they are ready to take the reins and use their gifts to bring about profit. I saw this like Debi’s greenhouse. It takes the school to pay for the baby plants or seeds (church) and the teachers, helpers, etc. to plant, water, and grow until time for the schools plant sale. Of course the school is hoping for a profit both financially for the school as well as the students to have learned and prospered enough to go on to higher ed or start their own business. The cycle goes on and on. This builds God’s Kingdom.

Debi, is this what you were saying in your comments Friday night, 10:46PM after I explained this vision to you or was this something else. I am a little confused. Not sure of your point above.

  22. You have me thinking deep again ChickenFarmer….I thought on the ID changes …there seemed to be God given help for Paul each time he went through a change to his ID…he had in Acts 22;7-13 those that were traveling with him helped him when he became blind and then Ananias who gave him the word of the Lord…The Holy Spirit is the one who helps us through those People that are sent and if we are obedient to the God given help that is sent our way we make it to the next Glory that Sara spoke about….Its a comforting thought to know we are never alone when we go through our ID changes like we learned at the Farming Spiritual Retreat even when we dont realize it He is always there;;;;;;If we Have Accepted Him as Our Lord…….and we want to change as He wants us to…..I agree with your prayer on strengthening and fine tuning using and bringing honor and glory with our gifts to the King…I just get really motivated and ecouraged, when I read these responses on the Daily Lily…you may never really know how much this site means to me and All those who respond there are people out there who read these responses and may not yet know how to put into words their own response but know they do read this site and oh the world of difference..it has to be making …its sure keeps me going and digging….thank you Chickenfarmer and Sara and Gary and Needles and All..the lilies….dj

  23. Sara, in response to your questions above. I think you telling me that vision gave me the idea for writing what I did in response to Wendy but what I thought was from a different perspective. I don’t think I was saying what you were above. In reflecting about this and looking back I should have cited/mentioned your telling me your vision in my response so all would know where I got my idea to write and give credit where credit is due. I thank you for bringing this to my attention and hope this clarifies any confusion.

  24. Sorry Debi,no,this is not what I was saying. I have no need for you to put my name down for credit on this site.

I was trying to understand what you were saying about “Sea of Identity.”

In my conversation with you and the vision I had I was talking about how the plant sale at school with the help of many many people and the seeds and plants must or should turn a profit for the school. But, mostly it doesn’t with the high cost of your income and other teachers, the school, the water, the seeds, flats, students, secretaries, principals, etc. Now, my question was, isn’t the church and it’s work much like this?

“Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people.” I Peter 2:9

My point of “Sea of Identity” is how does one turn a profit for the Kingdom of God. Forget my name and credit. Let us exalt the name of Jesus and His Kingdom work and that is bringing souls into the Kingdom and discipling them to stand and be workers in His Kingdom. Flowers, plants, etc. have little meaning to me without this as they will wither and die and fade away but He will not.

Now, you have explained that you were not thinking on this with your comment and that is ok. I just asked since we had just discussed this before your comment and I wanted to make sure I understood.

Blogging is fun and hopefully educational!

  25. “My prayer for each of us is that we will seek truth, let truth untwine our mixed emotions, bring forth a purity in heart, soul and spirit.” Thank you, Sara, for this prayer. It is difficult to seek ANYTHING, when our “mixed”
emotions are in control. This prayer reminded me that if we DO seek the
truth, our true identity can unfold.
    T- the
    R- real
    U- you
    T- takes

  26. On “participation” in building the Kingdom of GOD, Paul writes in 1Cor. 3:6-22, about how he planted, Apollos watered, but GOD gave the increase. And after the above comments & discussion I thought about how each person that Paul enumerated INVESTED something in the Gospel to bring it to the world. In reality, it costs to purchase seed. It costs to buy “land” in which to plant the seed. It costs to water and fertilize; it costs to harvest; it costs to bring it to market; it costs to publish and advertize the the Gospel and most of all it costs to purchase the precious fruits of the harvest. Was Paul talking about land and fields and garden plots??? NO! I think not. Kenneth Copeland said, “The GOOD News of the Gospel is free, but it costs millions to publish it.”
Paul exhorts us to build the KINGDOM on the FOUNDATION of CHRIST THE KING with gold, silver and precious stones; we could say with the precious GOLD of Gospel Truth and pure silver of Biblical Counsel. These all are very COSTLY. There is a price tag on the GOSPEL. Jesus paid all HIS part. Now, the ball is in our court.
In the BOOK OF NUMBERS, chp. 18, the LORD talks about the tithe and the offering and love gifts that HE established for HIS people to give to the service and the WORK of GOD.
It is what Paul talked about when he said that each will receive his own reward according to his labor and his giving, by the character and worth of the work that he has done and his generosity in contributing to the cost of building of the Kingdom.
Open your church’s eyes, Lord and our pockets.

  27. Needles I appreciate what you said, if we do seek the truth our true identity can unfold and in your acrostic..the real you takes hold. As I was trying to get the understanding of this and looking up ‘truth’ I saw where you can purify your own soul (I think that is the seat of emotions? Am I correct?)by obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren…'(I Pet 1:22)Would that purifying would make one’s true identity clearer?

  28. Debi,
I think you are asking me…is it our emotions that keep us from who we
are? When our emotions run wild, we lose our focus on who God made us to be.
    If we can get rid of the emotional part/or have better control of it;
rather, then our true authentic self can surface itself.

  29. Thanks Needles,
Yes that was the question and thanks for your insight of how important self-contol is linked to our true identity.

  30. 1 Peter 1:22 NLT “You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.”

We are purified when we accepted Jesus Christ into our hearts as Lord and Savior. This is the day of our new birth and the beginning of the new me/you. The new birth gives new inner purity. The new journey begins, walking it out. Growth, maturity. It starts with loving your new family. One of the reasons for this is they are the ones that will teach you and help you grow into maturity.

Maintaining and holding fast to Truth, will show the ‘authentic self’ in Christ Jesus. Like Needles said in praying Sara’s prayer and bringing forth truth.

Don’t forget to study Sara’s 4-H’s for more on this.

  31. Study the word to show yourself approved always tugs at my heart. I am so thankful to all of you for your daily challenges inviting me to study, dig, look for and live truth and share truth with one another.

I understand that I am accountable for my actions when all of you share truth with me.

Romans 12:16 “Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits. [Prov 3:7″

I smile sometimes about all this when I reflect on my natural birth training. I was blessed to have nine, yes 9, brothers and sisters. 4 brothers and 5 sisters and yes, they all went to the same church(s) and were believers. Ten children, really there were 12. All the same parents, same community. There ends the sameness! It took lots of studying, digging, and most of all discipling by parents, one another, teachers and pastors, ie to control the Big emotions.

As Needles points out…”then our true authentic self can surface itself.” As Dorothy said on one of the blogs, OUCH!

  32. How to stop those emotions? I was looking up
info. Debi, you, and I have it right there in black and white! I looked up self-control in Webster’s New world dictionary and guess what the definition of self control is…..”control of one’s own EMOTIONS, desires,
actions, etc. Looks like Webster was FAR ahead of all of us!

  33. I have been up early studying all the comments from both this blog and the 4-H’s blog. I have commented on 4-H’s with the fruit of the spirit from Galatians 5:22-23. We that are in this in depth study keep asking ourselves and one another “How do we have self-control.?” And, we want to be a whole in being.

I have become even more aware through this study today that the fruit of the spirit which include self-control is only produced by the Holy Spirit. We have to walk/live according to the guidelines that have been given to us by the Word of God. It amounts to dealing with sin. This also makes me think more about “Toss Me Aside and I will Toss you aside.”  Another of our study blogs.
Notes from one of my study Bibles. “We must not allow our freedom from the Law to become an occasion for fleshly activity. Also we are accountable for one another and need to keep watch for one another as well as for ourselves.”

WOW, this study and love of friends makes a woman like me think this is anti-wrinkle cream for the soul!!!! Love it!!!!

  34. OH Sara me too! thats what I was getting too after I read in Leviticus about the strange fire that was offered to the Lord..and thought on every thing Id been reading in the responses….the commentary In Leviticus even said it was sin ….they had not sought God to find out His will in the situation…God had a guideline that was to be followed…they tossed His (Gods) guideline aside and ended up being tossed aside themselves (burned up)…I know I said almost the same thing in my response on the 4-H…but when I read this response it really helped me to know I was on the right track….You said anti-wrinkle cream for the soul…man its loaded with sun screen too(so you don’t get burned):)dj

  35. One of the points in “Sea of Identity” is either us trying to find our identity in another or they in us. I would like to hear some communication on this? What do you think? Has this happened to you? Or, is is happening to others from you? Us wanting to find our ID in someone or they in us? Is this healthy? What should we do about it?

Would I like for my children or others to be a imitate me, including my flaws, etc.? The Apostle Paul said, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.”

As all of you can see I have a lot to learn.
