Quote for the day

Duty of Encouragement . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Barclay, Daily Study Bible, “Letter to Hebrews,” p. 137-138

“One of the highest of human duties is the duty of encouragement.…It is easy to laugh at men’s ideals; it is easy to pour cold water on their enthusiasm; it is easy to discourage others. The world is full of discouragers. We have a Christian duty to encourage one another. Many a time a word of praise or thanks or appreciation or cheer has kept a man on his feet. Blessed is the man who speaks such a word.

  1. Seeing encouragement (stimulating, fostering, urging)as a duty (moral or legal obligation or work)makes one realize the seriousness of this responsibility. It’s not an option, but something to be worked at and pursued for other’s benefit. I read in Hebrews 10:24 where we are told to “consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as is the manner of some, but exhorting (encouraging) one another and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

  2. I learned at our recent Daily lily retreat”throwing your light forward” that we have to care for oneanother like a shepard and they dont let wolves get thir sheep and they feed them and just like Paslms 24 says they are led beside still waters and they make sure that they are happy and growing strong they speak to their sheep and the sheep listen ……thats what we are to do for one another and just like Sara wrote above…its a duty…Jesus even said what we do to oneanother we do to Him ..(thinking..if we are in Him and we treat others badly and dont encourage..we have done it to ourselves)….so we dont bless and we dont get blessed…..if we dont want to stay in darkness..throw our light forward….we want to be encouraged…encourage….dj

  3. “You need to be aware of what others are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits. When we all help one another, everybody wins.” by Jim Stovall

  4. I recently got a new poster for my classroom with a young boy dressed in a baseball uniform, and it says everyone began somewhere. It is so important to encourage everyone. If it were not for encouragement I wonder where the world would be today. Would there be doctors, nurses, teachers, artiist, baseball players, authors, etc.” As a volunteer parent years ago, teachers encouraged me to be a teacher. As a teacher another teacher encouraged me in my dream of doing Reading/Writing Workshop. Knowing how important encouragement has been in my life, I am anxious and enthusiastic to encourage others in their talents. Sometimes we are the cheering squad and sometimes we are the players who need the cheering squad.

In our Christian walk we need encourage to perfect our walk or just to stand in the face of adversity and trail or hard situations which we have to face. I have been fortunate to have many who have cheered me on in my walk with Jesus. Sometimes they hold my hand and it seems sometimes they hold my heart. One example is that I received a card from Debi who does wonderful water color drawings and she drew me on a hill. It said that although the winds of adversity would come that I would stand and with stand. Many of us need that type of verse to keep us going when the times get tough. I have held on to that card for years saying Jesus I know I can do because I know you are there with me and this card says I will. Be encouraged that God sends others plus his Word to encourage us, hold our hand, or hold our hearts. God never fails us, not once.

  5. I suppose it is a real, spiritual art to encouraging and exhorting another. It is good to have discernment as to what one is encouraging someone in. FOR EXAMPLE: To encourage someone by telling them that they can sing, or dance or act or preach or paint, etc. when it is obvious that without a quick miracle from the living God the subjects have not yet found their true giftings in the Lord, then that encourage ment is a waste of time, effort and perhaps, money.
However, as has been pointed out above, when we encourage one another in the Lord; when we allow the compassion of Jesus to direct our words and actions; when we share the love of God with someone who is going through a rough time, or attempting a new work that the Lord has directed them to do; when we not only exhort and encourage but by our actions and our deeds we HELP them (pitch in, in some capacity) and support them, then…the Barnabus gifting that all Christians in the Body of Christ should employ will bring meet consequences in the discharge of the task(s) at hand.
Jesus exhorted Peter to walk on the water. That would have strengthened Peter’s faith. And Jesus helped him out when he began to sink. In another place, Jesus had compassion on the multitude and exhorted them by feeding them They were hungry and He HELPED them out. Aaron & Hur held up Moses’ hands to bring the victory to Israel.
Sometimes it pains a little to encourage someone else. Maybe they have the gifting you’ve hoped and prayed for. Maybe the Lord will tell you to support them and encourage them FINANCIALLY!!! Maybe the Lord will tell you to get down and do the dirty work with them that has to be done to accomplish a mission. Maybe!
But the true encourager will not be deterred by these things. The true gift of encouragement overlooks one’s own desires and aids and assists the other with a pure attitude. This is what helps bring the Kingdom of God into view.

  6. MG, your first paragraph is not encouragement but deception, isn’t it. If you see one cannot do something and you told thet could you are basically lying. This is bad for both the liar and the that has been deceived.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

  7. That is true, Debi. To encourage someone in a gifting that is NOT theirs IS deception. Perhaps the argument will arise that the subject (namely, the encourager) THINKS that the object (namely, the one being encouraged) has a certain gift or skill. That might just be OPINION and not discernment. Each of us is entitled to our own opinion but Opinion and Truth may not always coinside.
This happens in the classroom, also, where we are training up children in the way they ought to go, especially spiritually as we discussed in previous blogs but also, training for their vocations and professions. It is important to consider the whole person as we pray for them and enquire of the LORD the WAY in which we can encourage them for good and for success.

  8. Interesting interaction Debi and MG. I think Needles; blog on Perceiving and Perspective might give more insight and intersting interaction on this subject for all.

Great going with potential learning and understanding for all.

  9. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 “9 For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us. 10 Christ died for us so that, wheather we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. 11 So ENCOURAGE each other and build each other up, just as you are doing.”
1 Timothy 5: 12-13 “12 Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and purity. 13 Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, ENCOURAGING the believers and, teaching them.”
Definition: ENCOURAGE-1. TO INSPIRE WITH COURAGE AND HOPE. 2.STIMULATE, INCITE
If we inspire others with courage and hope, we can stimulate people. We can help others see how special they are and what beautiful gifts God has blessed them with. Encouragement has won wars, won over hearts, won ballgames and won people to Christ. In 1 Thess. and 1 Timothy God speaks of encouraging others. 1 Thess. even states “build each other up”. So inspire with courage and hope, stimulate and incite. Lets encourage others to join the winning team and win this war against satan. GO, FIGHT, WIN!!!!!!

  10. Right ON Chickenfarmer! You just made me realized why I loved being a cheerleader so much. (That was a few years ago. But, I still love it.

Just this A.M. I was cheering others on as they are working in various nations. We are living in such an exciting time that we can cheer lead from anywhere we are, home, shopping, sports, wherever we are, ever-ready to cheer. Just think, how God is cheering us on with all this exciting technology Hs has given to the world through great inventors. He really cheers those creative inventors on and they cheer us on. And, we can cheer others on to Christ Jesus with all the hi-tech, so go, fight, win.
