Pickle Relish from NC-a gift

Debi Chaves, the taster

Summer delights with fresh fruits! Fresh vegetables from our gardens whether we grow them or buy them.

Then the serious gardeners show off their skill be hobby for sharing with family and friends; or food for the cold winter months when at times might be very needful!

I have a Birthday in July and it’s such fun. Family and friends indulge me for the month with gifts that may only be found in this special hot summer month.

My son and DIL just dropped off a box of Georgia peaches. WOW they are ready for eating and we will enjoy!

For my Birthday , friend and one of our Daily Lily writers, Tammy Holton surprised me with a heavy box in the mail.

Showing in our video, the gift from Tammy, a quart of homemade relish from NC. It is unique for us in our location as far as we know.

It is delicious. I thought I should “show and tell” and share my gift with a gardener, friend and local co-writer of our blog, Debi Chaves. I think watching our video will tell the story of how excited with this relish from Edenton NC we are. I’m not sure who or how it was made but it’s a winner!

2 Corinthians 9:8

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

Thanks to ALL that grow gardens, share and care for one another and others in the heat and beauty of summer!

Bless you Abundantly!

  1. I’m so happy you guys enjoyed the relish! My coworker and her mom make these fresh and people here that purchase it, say the same thing you did…. “It’s good”😊😋🙃😌🙃☺️😉 🥒 🥒 🥒

    1. Tammy, please tell your co-worker the relish gets better each day! It’s great in chicken and tuna salad, potatoe salad and on my tomato sandwiches and hot dogs! etc etc

      1. I would like to add my thanks as well to what Sara conveyed, “Tammy, please tell your co-worker the relish gets better each day!”

And I also want to agree with this, “Bless you Abundantly!” that Sara expressed: “Thanks to ALL that grow gardens, share and care for one another and others in the heat and beauty of summer!”

It’s not easy growing, tending, and harvesting gardens and preserving their produce. There are so many variables, and especially with all the weather changes, insects, etc. That relish had such a perfect consistency throughout. Excellence surely was involved in every part of it.

  2. When I see canned goods like the relish, it makes me think of my grandmother Furlough. She would can lots of things, from fig preserves, to tomatoes, vegetable soups and I probably couldn’t name all she canned, even if I tried. 🍅 🌽 🍑 🍎 🌽 🥒 🍅 😊🩷

    1. Tammy, I remember your grandmother grew many of her vegetable and her canning and providing food for others was a gift of hospitality she had and generously used.

She was very active in her church where she often provided meals for the pastors. The church often hosted meals for community and she was known to share her many dishes from her garden and field!

Beautiful lady that leaves a great legacy to be admired, honored and emulated.

      Thanks for remembering and sharing!

  3. Giving some prayerful thought to the words I just shared about Tammy’s grandmother, aka Sister Furlough of Roper, NC.

    As I finished writing the words about her growing, canning and sharing her food supply with her family and community I left my chair to turn the TV off where I had been listening to the news when I heard;

1 in 5 American children go hungry everyday.

I was a bit overwhelmed. How could this be in the USA? I had just heard politicians with words; USA the greatest in the world. How great we are etc I thought 1 in 5 children going hungry daily. I don’t know if statistics would have been higher or lower in Sister Furlough’s days. She and many others in those days attended church on regular basis. On most Sundays food was shared with all. Did that make a difference in feeding children and families that were hungry.

Regardless, why now? What can be done in our lives to share and change? I’m not sure what to say or ask? Only why? Does church sharing help? Does government programs help?

  4. Tammy, do you have footnotes for our scripture?

2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

I love thinging about, “you will abound in every good work.”
