Hornets of the Bible

Hornets Nest

This Hornets nest hung just a little to close over the sidewalk where children and walkers alike might be making their trek for opening of a new school year. My husband and I thought to empty the nest and make a gift for our Grand child’s P-k classroom.

I can just imagine little eyes peeking in the magical opening and little minds wondering how could those little pesty hornets make such an amazing thing. Me, too! My husband began to marvel at how well it was woven on the branch. And, it is awesome.

Then I began to really wonder why did God create these things that sting! I began to ponder as I googled Hornets in Bible! I’m sharing the verses. But then I began to read in context God’s use for hornets and see just how useful they are in God’s plan.

I would like to hear your thoughts on these scriptures and Hornets. Imagine our donation to a class of PreK children hearing your story and wondering why did God do such a thing?

Exodus 23:28 – And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.

Deuteronomy 7:20 -Moreover the LORD thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.

  • Joshua 15:33: Mentions the Judean town of Zorah, which literally means “town of hornets”.

Joshua‬ ‭24‬:‭12‬ ‭“I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow.”

  1. What a great photo and discovery!

That hornets’ nest sure is an architectural and engineering marvel! To think that God created them with such ability to work together, design and construct says to me how God made, knows about, and is involved in each of His creature’s lives and purposes. Just this am I was reading from Psalm 51 and was in awe of, “I know every bird on the mountains, and all the animals of the field are mine.” (vs 11)

Deut 7:18 : Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;” This verse reminds me that God also used his creatures (frogs, flies, locusts) to wreak havoc on Pharaoh’s people in order to accomplish His purposes, showing how mighty God’s creatures are when they do His bidding.

Joshua 24:12 and Deuteronomy 7:20 seems to say to me how powerful these creatures were in driving and routing out the enemy in ways that man and his weapons could probably not compare to…the hornets were even able to find the hiding places.

God must want us to be reminded of His vast creation and creatures and how He used them and could use them again to “send terror ahead” (as my NLT translation says).

I think your Grandchild and class will be thrilled with it!

  2. Wow! I know those little children loved getting to see this hornets nest! Amazing how those hornets can make something like this.😲
The footnotes from the NIV for Exodus 23:28 says: “ The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain. The Septuagint (the Greek Translation of the OT) renders it ‘wasp,’ but the translators may have been guessing. In any event, the Lord promises to send some agent to disable or frighten the peoples of Canaan so that they will not be able to resist Israel’s invasion. But probably the word involves concrete imagery, and the focus of the statement is on the effects— therefore we are not to look for some historical agent to which the word metaphorically refers(cf. Isa 7:18)”

    1. ”any event, the Lord promises to send some agent to disable or frighten the peoples of Canaan so that they will not be able to resist Israel’s invasion. ”

The answer is in, the power of the Lord, regardless of the method or sting He uses. ” Is that right?

  3. Debi gives a vs that I think confirms Tammy’s footnotes. . Do you agree?
Deut 7:18 : Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;” This verse reminds me that God also used his creatures (frogs, flies, locusts) to wreak havoc on Pharaoh’s people in order to accomplish His purposes, showing how mighty God’s creatures are when they do His bidding.

  4. Tammy’s footnotes, “any event, the Lord promises to send some agent to disable or frighten the peoples of Canaan so that they will not be able to resist Israel’s invasion”, and this scripture quoted by Sara, “Joshua 15:33: Mentions the Judean town of Zorah, which literally means “town of hornets” seem to really relate.

As I read the entire chapter of Joshua 15, I saw it was about God allotting territories and driving out inhabitants for the Tribe of Judah. I noticed that the title of the chapter in my NLT translation was, “The Land Given to the Tribe of Judah.”, and that the title for verses 21-63 was “The Towns Allotted to Judah”. Vs 45 -47 caught my attention, particularly in light of the current world news as Gaza was named. The verses read: “The territory of the tribe of Judah also included Ekron and its surrounding settlements and villages.  From Ekron the boundary extended west and included the towns near Ashdod with their surrounding villages.  It also included Ashdod with its surrounding settlements and villages and Gaza with its settlements and villages, as far as the Brook of Egypt and along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.”
