Faith and Obedience when Facing Death

Daniel chapter 3 clearly shows faith and obedience to our Lord. King Nebuchadnezzar was a very powerful king of Babylon. He was so powerful he built a golden statue ninety feet tall and ninety feet wide and commanded everyone to bow down to this enormous statue when they heard the musical instruments. King Nebuchadnezzar commanded his people to serve his gods. If anyone refused to obey his commands they would be thrown in the blazing furnace. Everyone obeyed King Nebuchadnezzar. With fearful hearts his people bowed downed before the statue and worshiped a false god. Three Jewish men refused to bow down to the statue. When King Nebuchadnezzar heard of this disobedience he was furious. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were bought before the King. King Nebuchadnezzar gave them one last chance to bow down.

Daniel 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” (NLT)

Nebuchadnezzar in his anger made the furnace seven times hotter. Then they tied up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and threw them into the blazing furnace killing the guards because the fire was so intense. King Nebuchadnezzar saw a fourth man in the furnace protecting God’s children. These three men were never harmed. They didn’t even smell like smoke as they stepped out of the flames with their clothing untouched by the flames. Nebuchadnezzar was so amazed by their awesome God that he gave them a raise and commanded everyone to worship their God or they would be torn apart.

Through their faith and obedience, three of God’s children changed the faith of a whole country. In Daniel 3:16-18, these three men of faith showed no fear. Daniel 3:18 But even if he doesn’t (save us), we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up. They stood on God promise and no matter what was going to happen they would have rather died than to worship a false god. WOW!!! This is awesome to me. I have always loved this story. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not get this awesome faith by going to church every other week and putting God last in their lives. They put God first in their lives. These three men were stronger than the powerful King Nebuchadnezzar and his entire army because of their faith and obedience. Our God is bigger than a blazing furnace seven times hotter. Lord thank you for this awesome lesson. I pray that the lilies and I walk with faith and obedience through the blazing furnace.

  1. “Through their faith and obedience, three of God’s children changed the faith of a whole country. In Daniel 3:16-18, these three men of faith showed no fear.”

Wendy, thanks for these words. I think most of us in our Nation and the Nations face dilemmas much like these on a daily basis. It is Kingdom Building, what does each one of us do with the decisions we have to face in the fire of trials. If some of us were to face our decisions, we might find we run, hide, deny, make God’s Word say what we want it to say or suppress.

Why, it seems we enjoy the benefits to us that tearing down or destroying another or others bring to us.

This is an extremely difficult example to face, but face we must.

  2. Wendy your blog is an example of such bold faith, faith refined in the fiery furnace. I read in I Peter 1:7 that ‘the genuiness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire may be found to praise, honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.’ I join your prayer above Wendy for the lilies also.

  3. Dear Wendy this is one of my favorite stories too. Thank you for bringing it forth on the Daily Lily. Thanks for the reminder that God is the one that is with us in our fiery trials, and it is God who will pull us through the terror of when things heat up all around us and we think we can not handle another thing. Thanks for reminding us that He is there right beside us through it all. He will carry us through every situation and walk us into the light, refreshing day with not a stench of the firey trials if only we obey and keep our eyes focused on him. Thanks for reminding us that their faith changed a nation. May our faith through the firey trials be a testimony and honor Him before man. May many know His mercy and grace through our words of His loving kindness.

  4. Let us not forget that there were three men in agreement. A three folded cord, and that cannot be easily broken. Finding three intercessors and agreeing in prayer with action is a rarity. Most of the time I see ourselves (individuals) wanting this kind of intervention in our lives, is not because we refused to worship another God. For now we live in a nation where we have not this problem. Although, there are some nations, where this might not be the case, and most of us probably will stay far away and not have faith to believe that God will protect us as we go and stand against those powers and confess to them that we will not bow to their gods.

I, too, love these stories of life and death. God saving people and nations to show His power and preserve His Name, America has been extremely blessed and free to worship daily without making choices like this. It seems we should pick ourselves up a notch in worship and not bring the story to fit our little daily happenings that will not show anything to the world or bring one soul into Faith in Jesus Christ or for that matter will not change one person. We can’t even change a worm.
“I pray that the lilies and I walk with faith and obedience through the blazing furnace.” Wendy, your prayer is very scary. You remind me of a lady minister, named Guinn Shaw. She has blazed the Nations of the World with the gospel of Jesus Christ without concern for her life.

‘Helping Hands.’ This brings evangelism to the world and builds The Church…A church where the gates of hell will not prevail.” (Find more of this on Helping Hands, Hoping Hearts, Holy Healing). I pray that we will have eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

  5. I read this blog and really gave long hard deep thought to this ….that situation was for our instruction…those men were focused, in agreement..and Like Sara reminded us that was a strong force (3 fold cord) not easily broken…and the whole nation heard ….about the outcome…not just those 3 men….and when I read Sara response about Gwen Shaw blazing the nations …..well it makes one understand that it’s not just about oneself when the trials and tribulations come..God already gave us His Holy Spirit and said He will never leave nor forsake us….but its much more. It’s to the nations, to the people, to the deep regions, where the Gospel and the things that would stop that from going forth that’s to my understanding the fiery furnace that the Forth person (Gods Heavenly Angelic Army etc…whomever He chooses) shows up on the scene…..not just for the everyday things that God gives wisdom to come through for….yes it is a scary very scary prayer….its asking for the furnace …and it’s not what one thinks……You two (Wendy and Sara) really make a person THINK on this blog….dj

  6. Gary and I were discussing this blog last night and thinking, “wonder if we had to identify and tell about a fire in our lives like unto this, would we have one?”

There has to be something really unique about this story for us to be thinking on it after such an extreme long period in history.

We know the King’s name, the nations, the three men and their names, the act that brought the fire, and the results of the fire. Even realizing the fourth person involved.

Our minds, fears, doubts, unbelief and the like might try and make us think we are there but hopefully we are not.

We might have someone in our lives that might be trying to convince us they are King Nebuchadnezzar, but are they?

We are praying that we will be able to rightly discern and use God’s word to overcome our fears that paralyzes us and holds us captive really to ourselves. We go on shutdown. Let us arise and walk and go from from this place. May we all be healed in Jesus Name.

  7. Wendy, I have watched and heard the stories of Lilies surviving the fire, the rains, and the winds this week. Stayed beautiful through each day of trial and well prepared to celebrate the Easter festivities which is just around the corner and waiting to see the beauty of the Lilies arrive in our churches as we lift our voices to “Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow.”

Battle cries, intercession, prayer, love and support from other fellow believers making a three folded -cord like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego as one goes brings the best to God’s people.

I would like to say to all the helpers this week that you are so appreciated and ask for special blessings of renewed strength and much joy and peace.

Thanks again Wendy for be a forerunner for the Kingdom of God.

  8. Why did the fourth person, which many believe to be God, get in the fire with them instead of taking them out of the fire?

  9. I know that God is true to His word and He says in Isaiah 43;1-5 He said Israel fear not…when you pass through the waters and through the flame…I am with thee…He didnt say I will take you out of the water and out of the flame..He said He would be there with them…He said this people I have formed for myself; they shall show forth my praise…and in 1 Peter 1;7 that the trial of you faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ…It seems this was to me like a living example of this scripture in 1Peter…Daniel 3;16-18 being the living example and 1 Peter 1;7…tells what it was doing….and God said He would never leave nor forsake those that are His..?dj

  10. It appears that FIRE, WIND & Water are no challenge for the LORD. As stated above, THE PRE-INCARNATE CHRIST was the 4th PERSON in the FIRE. In another historical episode, GOD ALMIGHTY commands the RED SEA using a great wind, divides it into two parts by pushing the water into huge walls on either side of the path, dries up the sea bed using the wind and allows HIS people to walk dry-shod in the pathway that HE makes for them. Again, in another place, Jesus Christ stops the violent wind with a WORD, “Peace, be still” And then, to prove further, His sovereignty, HE walks on the water.
In the fire, out of the fire, in the water, on the water, in the grave OUT OF THE GRAVE! CHRIST IS SOVEREIGN!!

  11. Perhaps God was in the fire with the three men because God is often associated with fire and that is one of the ways He shows himself mighty. He is like a refiner’s fire. (Malachi 3:2) A fire goes before Him and burns up His enemies.”(Ps 97:3 He led the children of Israel with a pillar of fire.(Ex 13:21) And just a thought that perhaps it also showed to the enemies that the Fire of God is greater than the fire of man. Our God is a consuming fire(Heb 12:29)and His fire consumed the fire of the king.
