Our Quote for the week

Green Bough & Singing Birds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

Applescw-1

A Chinese proverb expresses this truth: “If I keep a green bough in my heart, the singing bird will come.”

Here are five “green boughs” we should strive to keep in our hearts:

The green bough of Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is not only contagious, it is attractive. The singing bird of success is drawn toward the green bough of enthusiasm. Where there is enthusiasm, there is excitement, and where there is positive excitement, there is more joy in the job, more sparkle in the eye, and more zest in living.

The green bough of Kindness. Kindness is the Golden Rule in action. Surely what the world needs now is more kindness. The green boughs of kindness grow from the tree of love, and when we truly love others, kindness is natural and instinctive. We should remember the little girl’s prayer: “God, help the bad people be good…and please help the good people to be nice.”

The green bough of Generosity. Our lives sing with joy when we generously share ourselves, our talents and resources in loving service to others. Generosity is the secret of happiness; it is the golden key that unlocks the gates of joy, fulfillment and life more abundant.

The green bough of Humor. It has been said that if we learn to laugh at ourselves we will always be amused. The green bough of humor helps us to laugh at ourselves even when we make a faux pas, when we goof up, when we trip over our tongues…

The green bough of Gratitude. Green boughs of gratitude provide the perfect home for the bluebirds of happiness. With gratitude in our hearts, there can be no room for self-pity, resentment or bitterness. Gratitude attracts more blessings—especially when we humbly and joyfully express our thanksgiving to our God and to those who have encouraged and inspired us.

  1. This is the Daily Lilys discription to me with all the lilies….its beautiful…
Here are some scriptures that came to my mind after reading this…Romans 12:15..rejoice with them that do rejoice,….verse 16..be of the same mind one toward another..
Proverbs 17:22 a merry heart doeth good like a medicine….Luke 6:45..a good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is good;….Philipians 4:8..finally, brethren, what ever things are true, whatever thngs are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and and if there be any praise, think on these things. those things which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do, and the God of peace shall be with you..(Paul)….dj

  2. Thank you Sara for these encouraging values you remind us of…truly fruits of the spirit. If we live by them all the green boughs will produce a healthy green tree.
Ps 1:1-3: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly nor stands in the path of sinners nor sits in the seat of the scornful but his delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in season whose leaf shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper.”

  3. enthusiasm – “work with enthusiasm, as though you were
working for the Lord rather than for
    people” Ephesians 6:7
kindness – has anyone ever heard…”treat others like
you want to be treated?” Well,Matt.19:19says
“Love your neighbor as yourself”…and most
of us do love ourselves, right?
generosity – give and it shall be given unto you

humor – I’m with Dorothy on this one, “a merry heart
doeth good like a medicine”. (see humor)
gratitude – “Be thankful in all circumstances”
    1Thess. 5:18

  4. The comments above and the meaning of the green boughs shows to me to think on good and do good…to persist in it, to grow it in our lives. Galations 6: 9 exhorts us to not “grow waery while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore as we have opportunity let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
I read an interesting quote by Thomas Carlisle “Give me a man who sings at his work. That’s the kind of people I want to hire!” People are wanting to hear that singing bird in us.

  5. The Word enthusiasm is taken from the GREEK word for GOD
THEOS! So to have enthusiasm means to be “in GOD’ or to be INSPRIRED. Inspired means to be “IN SPIRIT” or In the SPIRIT, or BREATHED BY the SPIRIT. What a wonderful way to conduct one’s day! LLIFE??
Isaiah says in 61:3b, “I will give the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that THEY MAY BE TREES Of righteousnes, the planting of the Lord the HE may be glorified. The Fruitful bough is being described here by the LILIES of the LORD… green olive trees, in the house of the LORD.
Solomon describes the godly wife as a fruitful bough.
In Luke 21:29, Jesus compares the nation to the FIG TREE, as a sign. For when its boughs are full of foliage, green boughs, that is an indication of the next MOVE OF GOD; His returning to take us with HIM. I want to be a green tree, a fruitful bough with enthusiasm, kindness, generosity, humor and gratitude.

  6. One of the main things this proverb teaches me is that if I have a dream in my heart and can believe with a good attitude and right motives I will see it come to be. I will participate in it with Joy.

Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

I think we get a clear photo of a dream that God will oversee and make sure it comes to be, will never be one that is exclusive unto ourselves. For when we delight ourselves in Him our heart overflows to His children in love.

    Isn’t He wonderful!

  7. We need to put each of these into our daily lives. Enthusiasm: Let’s get excited about our Lord and his promise. I’ve seen some believers,(including myself at times) go to church with no entusiasm at all. We need to go to church as if we we’re in the final playoffs and we were on the winning team. We need to get excited about our Lord and what he’s doing in our lives. Bring out the pom poms and lets do some cartwheels up and down the asile of the church. Lets get excited for Jesus.
Kindness: We can all be nice. It’s not that hard. I with Needles. We need to treat people like we want to be treated. Even if others are nice we need to be nice. Just remember we are doing this for Jesus. If we clam his name and others see us being unkind then we are dragging Jesus’ name through the mud. Remember we are on his team.
Generosity: Give to others. If someone is hungry feed them. If someone is cold cloth them. We need to give to others just like Jesus gives to us. We are on his team. He’s in charge. He’s the captain and what he says goes. We are carring his name around.
Humor: We definately need to laugh. Laughter makes us feel better. When we can laugh at ourselves, we humble ourselves. This helps us from being to prideful. Laughter is wonderful as long as it’s used correctly, and your not hurting someone’s feelings with it.
Gratitude: We need to be grateful for everything God has blessed us with. Our cups are overflowing with blessings. Lets be grateful for what we have now and what we are going to have in the future.
We need to practice each one of these behaviors daily. We need to make these a positive part of our lives and form these behaviors into a habit. Remember we are on Jesus’ team and we will win at the end.

  8. If I keep a green bough (right living keeping solely focused on the Lord Jesus Christ) which flows as fountains of humor, generosity, kindness, and enthusiasm into the hearts of others, surely my heart is filled to overflowing with praise for the maker …who makes (the bough) grow and become greater 1 Corinthians 3:7. For as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth (green bough), so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise (the bird to sing) to spring forth before all the nations. Isaiah 61:11 NKJV In Revelations it says in 19:5-6 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. “Blessed are those who dwell in your house, they are ever praising you.” Psalms 84:4 May we all have green boughs focused on Jesus and His work for others and may it cause our hearts to sing for JOY at what God is able to do.

  9. I think Sara and chickenfarmer are good cheerleaders for The Daily Lily team….Sara cheers us on to dream big and participate actively with others to make it happen. Chickenfarmer rouses us to get in the game and make sure we practice, practice, practice daily. They certainly cheer us on to a win! Thanks for such enthusiasm.
