Recently I came across the book “Then Sings My Soul” which tell the story behind Christian songs. Turning to the song “Jesus Loves Me”,because I was doing a project for my Sunday School class, questions arose within me.
Two sisters, Anna and Susan Warner who after the Panic of 1837 found themselves go from riches to rags found they needed to do something to bring in money to live on. They both found they were gifted at writing resulting in 106 publications which they authored together and/or separately. Being obedient to God and not giving up or in other words standing on The Rock (Jesus) they persisted in the storm of their lives.
One of the novels written jointly was entitled “Say and Seal”. In the novel a little boy named Johnny Fox was dying and his Sunday School teacher comforts him by rocking him and making up a little song entitled “Jesus Loves Me”.
The sisters who went on to be in heaven never knew that the little song “Jesus Loves Me” was set to a children musical score and would be the best children’s hymn on earth. These are my questions:
What is the one thing we will do that will affect generations to come for Jesus?
Do we see stories in the Bible of others who have affected the earth for Jesus by one thing they have done?
Who on earth has done one thing other than the sisters above to affect the earth for Jesus?
Thanks for sharing the background story on this favorite song, Rena.
Thanks for sharing this history Rena. You have asked a few questions above. That last question: “Who on earth has done one thing other than the sisters above to affect the earth for Jesus?” I could give a possible answer to this question, Billy Graham. Foxnews published on February 25, 2018, “Four things Billy Graham’s life can teach us”, “First, he had integrity. Second, he was humble. Third, he had compassion. and Fourth, he stood firmly for God.” You can search this article on foxnews.com and read it. I think it would be safe to say Billy Graham certainly lived a life that affected the earth for Jesus.
Today, August 16, 2018, DOD, Aretha Franklin…all the airways are talking about the life of Aretha Franklin. She sure has left a world legacy by sharing her music which is being credited as a gift from God. Her pastor speaks of her music and generosity to the work of the church.
Tammy mentions Billy Graham…I would say his preaching is one of the things that will be forever remembered as well as George Bev Shea’s singing voice before each sermon. Aretha is remembered as the voice before her preaching Father. And, singing for Martin Luther King as well as Presidents. As well as feeding the poor.
I don’t think this question asked, “What is the one thing we will do that will affect generations to come for Jesus?” Is necessarily a question that is answerable. I would say all believers should answer a faithful servant of God in all things I do.
Amen!
