Breath of God

God’s spirit made me;
the Almighty’s breath enlivens me.
—Job 33:4 (CEB)

God our Creator gives “breath to the people on earth and spirit to those who walk this earth” (Isa. 42:5)

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
—Psalm 33:6 (NRSV)

  1. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
  2. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
    To do and to endure.
  3. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
    Glows with Thy fire divine.
  4. Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity. Author Edwin Hatch 1886

Breathe on me

  1. Thinking on the scriptures you posted, Sara, then listening to the words of the song (which felt like a breath) sure brings a peace. I don’t know if I have ever really thought on the uniqueness, importance and power in God’s breath…and how our very breath and life is dependent on it. His breath surely is a life-changing force and that hymn really tells us how we need it to be transformed. Thank you for speaking to us about this and sharing the beautiful hymn.

I was thinking about the words somewhere in the Bible, “He breathed on them”, and found it in John 20 where Jesus appeared to His disciples after He had been crucified. “Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

    1. As the lines of nations blur when it comes to this horrific Covid-19 virus that spreads from person to person by breathing on one another. Cover your face with a mask to help you from not spreading the virus to others or they to you. That includes family and friends. This we are told by the world’s top scientists.

Love tells me wear a mask regardless of my thoughts and certainly my limited, really 0 knowledge of science. Love your neighbor as yourself? Mark 12:31 You will know them by their fruit. Matthew 7:15-20 This means the outward manifestation of my faith by my behavior and deeds.

The songwriter must have known without the Spirit of God, the very breathe of God he just would not love others and do the right thing like God would and does do. This first versus speaks to God as Solomon did, I don’t know right from wrong. I‘m just a child. We shared this in our wisdom blog.

“Breathe on me, Breath of God,
      Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.”

As we watch in dismay our neighbors suffer and many die from bad breath that was exhaled from family, friends and neighbors some may cry out, Breathe on me breathe of God until my heart is pure…

It seems there must be an entrance of God the Creator, Father God as Jesus stands at our heart’s door and knocks because He wants to enter our life and way of thinking as we enjoy a meal together. He wants to enliven us as the scripture says,

      “God’s spirit made me;
      the Almighty’s breath enlivens me.”
      —Job 33:4 (CEB)

We collectively as nations of people stare a deadly enemy in the face. As Debi shared John 20 where Jesus enliven the group with His Spirit to go and do as He would do. Also, Jesus taught us to pray, forgive us our sins as we forgive others theirs. The chain of events seem to need a connector and the connector may be the breathe of God?

The love of God for all!

      1. “The chain of events seem to need a connector and the connector may be the breathe of God?”

It sure seems so, Sara. And especially after reading your “chain” of thoughts and scriptures woven with the thread of “The love of God for all!”

  2. What a beautiful song (and unbelievable beauty in the pictures)to keep in my heart and mind, as I go through this work day. Thanks for sharing. 🙏

    1. And, thanks to you Tammy for glowing with his divine fire!

“ Breathe on me, Breath of God,
      Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
      Glows with Thy fire divine.”

  3. “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.”—Romans 8:26 (NRSV)

Have you practiced deep breathing, breathe in and breathe out? Take deep breaths? Even my Apple Watch reminds me if I’ve been a bit remiss on a goal I had asked my watch to help me with!

Likewise? The Spirit? When I think about the breathe of God acting as diligent as my Apple Watch. Look? Just as these words inked this space my watch prompted me with, “even a minute of breathing can refuse stress.” I believe my Apple Watch! But, do I believe? Now read for a promo….

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.”—Romans 8:26 (NRSV)

    LOVE of GOD! BELIEVE!

    1. Reading the footnotes to the above Scripture, Romans 8: 26-27, from my Bible is encouraging, and I’d like to share here. “As a believer, you are not left to your own resources to cope with problems. Even when you don’t know the right words to pray, the Holy Spirit prays with and for you, and God answers. With God helping you pray, you don’t need to be afraid to come before him. Ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for you ‘in harmony with God’s own will.’ Then, when you bring your requests to God, trust that he will always do what is best.”

      1. Love the footnotes. This guidance makes me jump with joy knowing I can be in harmony with God.“Ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for you ‘in harmony with God’s own will.”

  4. Sara, I think your “promo” scripture along with your breathing example and then tying it to goals, reduced stress, and “Believe” is a real encouragement!

The verse of the hymn it helps illustrate for me is:
“Until with Thee I will one will,
    To do and to endure.”

  5. What a calming effect the song “ Breath of God, Breathe on Me” has on me, I love when God’s presence comes to me in the morning hours when I sit and open His word with praise music softly playing in the background.

In Genesis 2:27. The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. That man was Adam. We sometimes call him the first Adam. God’s presence and His breathe into the body gave life.. But with Adam’s sin came death, a taking away of life. As Debi quoted in John 20: 22 When He had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “ Receive the Holy Spirit.” . As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” . Jesus is sometimes called by people as the last Adam who breathes life eternal life on people. Who are these people and how can we be one of these people? Romans 3:10 proclaims, “As it is written, There is none righteous , no, not one.” The Bible makes it clear that we have all sinned. We all have sinned in need mercy and forgiveness from God. (Titus3: 5-7). Because of our sin, we deserve eternal punishment ( Matthew 25: 46). We know that Jesus, God’s son , took on flesh and became a human beingHe took on the punishment that we deserve (Romans5:8). Jesus rose from the dead. to prove victory over sin, death and hell Colossians), because of all of this we have our sins forgiven and we will have eternal life, life if we place our faith in God. (Ephesians 2:8) declares, “ For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God.

God presence will move you and His presence will be with you changing you and encouraging you to go forward with him and how He wants you you to serve him to glorify Him in your service using the gifts he has given you. How to be in His presence- Here is the sinners prayer you can pray: “ God, I know I am a sinner. I know I deserve the consequences of my sin. However, I am trusting in Jesus that HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION PROVIDED FOR MY FORGIVENESS OF SIN. I Trust in Jesus and Jesus alone as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you Lord for saving me and for forgiving me! Amen,
Job 33:4 says, “ For the Spirit ( the Spirit of God) has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Once we accept Jesus as our Savior we are all children of God and will live ( having eternal life ) with Jesus Chris. Wow be in the presence with Jesus forever starting with accepting Jesus as Savior.

During these days with COVID, are hope is the presence of the Lord. This song expresses our life with Jesus:

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until You come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
    I am strong, when I am…more.

  6. When I read Tammy’s footnotes and looked up the definition of harmony, I saw one synonym was “symphony”. Then in reading and thinking on Rena’s words, “He wants you you to serve him to glorify Him in your service using the gifts he has given you”; I thought that a symphony occurs when all the orchestra players tune their unique and different instruments with each other and then simultaneously follow the Conductor.
