My Journey to India

I have a lot of favorites as far as hymns go but one that sticks out in my mine the most is:
Here I am Lord
Words and Music by Daniel L Schutte © 1981
Genesis 46:2
“And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night,
and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.”
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin,
My hand will save.
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
I, who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my words to them.
Whom shall I send?
I, the Lord of wind and flame,I will send the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide,
Til their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?

This song especially sticks out for me as I was introduced to it about 12 years ago when Christ Church Inter’l went to India to minister for two weeks. It was the last song I heard before I was to board the plane to India with the team to go off to India. I had never been out of the country before and was just getting over a fear of flying. That was a good thing as we were in the air a lot.

There were many obstacles in the way of going and many conversations for and against the trip. There were many hurdles to go over even as the trip occurred. Never think that when you follow Jesus there won’t be a few obstacles and hurdles to overcome. Jesus is worth it all! In your work place you may find people who think they are against you but they are against what you stand for. Stand and with stand – Jesus did. He endured pain, taunting, spitting, whips, nails, torture, and death for each of us. Hopefully we will not have to endure all that He endured. What makes us think our journey of pray and praise for the Lord Jesus will be any different. Jesus in the above song and also in scripture extends HOPE to those who will come and a satisfaction that NO ONE can satisfy but HIM.

I am a novice writer and painter who loves to be creative. I love singing but can't sing without a hymnal, except for children's songs. I love to make up my own songs and love the old hymns. I love to garden and got that love from my Mom and Dad who taught be everything I know from planting to harvesting to canning. I'm happy gardening, walking with my pug, JD Sir Winston Churchill, painting, and crafting. I love to spend Saturday's sitting in my rocker going through a bible study. I love working with elementary school aged children and seeing them use their creative gifts. I have taught Sunday school for a number of years and taught in the public schools for 18 years. I might say I'm retired but I spend most of my time subbing and enjoy it immensely. The kids spark my own creativeness.

  1. Rena, I love this song as well. I first heard it from my sister Barbara. She loved it so much that when she was dying with cancer she asked that it be sung at her funeral in a Methodist Church in Boone, NC. And, it was, touching many hearts.

Barbara was an outstanding Bible Teacher and leader in her churches (Methodist) both in Annapolis, Md and Boone, NC. She also taught Bible Studies by Mrs. Johnson in communities. She was admired by many for her masterful teaching and love of all. Love was her theme and she was love. Yet, she like you spoke of and had to overcome many obstacles in following her Master and Lord Jesus.

Even in her dying at the age of 57, she had a struggle but held to this song as well as many other hymns. I remember something her pastor told me during her time of suffering that I didn’t like at the time but became a comfort for me. One of her pastors said, ‘she will be wholly healed when she is with the Lord.” I wanted her healed and with us.

When flesh appears in live form to us it is time to overcome and fight the good fight as the Apostle Paul instructed us to do. Our flesh and Spirit is at war. The results are up to us if I am understanding correctly? Am I?

  2. “When flesh appears in live form to us it is time to overcome and fight the good fight as the Apostle Paul instructed us to do. Our flesh and Spirit is at war”
Read with me: Ephesians 6: 10-18 ” A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

Yes, Sara, our flesh and spirit is at war.

  3. Yes I stood up to fear with the help of the CCI team at my elbow encouraging and praying all the way. I remember one particular time – We had an 80 year old lady with us who was an experienced prayer warrior and minister (ministry was to the American Indians). We were put in a room not of our choosing and she knelt in prayer and prayed and prayed and God heard. We certainly were in one accord and due to her prayer we were released to have breakfast and to be on our way to do what God had called us to do.

  4. God is able to make someone’s ‘darkness bright’ because when someone is willing to stand up and be used…and maybe when it isn’t comfortable or convenient or easy. I still have a card that Sara’s sister, Barbara, sent to me several years ago. She took her love, energy, the gifts and talents God gave her and bore her light to me by taking time from her very busy schedule to write a poem of encouragement and send it to me in a beautiful hand-made, personally illustrated card. And she sent it in a timely manner, at a dark time when I needed the special encouragement that God had gifted her with. I will never forget her…she did say ‘Here am I Lord”.
We can each light another’s path if we can listen to His calling, say ‘Here am I’ and carry the light of our giftings that he has given us to use for someone else in the body of Christ. It may be a small flashlight, a glowing torch or a powerful search light…but each can bear a light.

  5. I just heard the story of Jon Sheptock this week. He was born with no arms and a short right leg. Read his story from his website (below). His adopted Mother’s story amazes me. 37 children. I love her one quote “The only handicap is not knowing Jesus as Savior.” Be encouraged by Jon Steptock’s story.

  6. When flesh appears in live form to us it is time to overcome…. When I read this it reminded me of a song by Steven Curtis Chapman titled “ONLY NATURAL”. In this song he is singing about the flesh and being an overcomer. Here are the Lyrics: Only Natural
    Mirror, mirror on the wall
Who’s the biggest fool of all
You don’t have to answer me
‘Cause when I look at you I see
A prisoner set free from his chains
Acting like he’s still a slave
To the prison he’s been set free from
You may say it’s only natural for me to act this way
Well I know it’s only natural
But I have not been made….
    Only natural, only natural
I’ve got the Spirit of the living God alive in me
Giving me power so I don’t have to be
    Only natural, only natural
    So mirror, mirror look again
You’ve seen the fool that I have been
But did you see the grace that covers me
That makes me what I am NOT NATURALLY
It’s supernatural powers brings life out of the grave
It gives sight to the blind man
And it will not let me stay….
    Only natural, only natural
I’ve got the Spirit of the living God alive in me
Giving power so I don’t have to be
    Only natural, only natural

I think this is an awesome song about live human flesh and overcoming this flesh through the living God that lives in us.

  7. Thank you for singing to me and all of us Chickenfamer! I really like this part “GRACE IS THE ONLY THING..That makes me what I am NOT NATURALLY”

And, how Steve reminds us that the Holy Spirit is at work in us. I thank The Holy Spirit for being my teacher, my counselor, my comforter and for revealing Jesus to me with light when I am having a hard time seeing. I way to many times act like I am not set free! Sing on Chickenfarmer and Steve.

How did your new Bible Study go tonight!

  8. We had a wonderful Bible study class tonight. I am facilitating an insight group. The study is to help us overcome the roadblocks that occur in our life. We all have something or have the potential of having something that may be a life-controlling problem. A life-controlling problem could be drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, sexual addiction, gambling, or tobacco use. It can also be something as simple as watching to much TV or trying to keep a perfect house. It could even include harmful feelings such as fear or anger. Paul talks about life-controlling problems in terms of “slaves”. Romans 6:14 “Sin shall not be your master.” 1 Cor.6:12 “Everything is permissible for me-but I will not be mastered by anything (or anyone)” 2Peter 2:19 “For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.” If anything becomes the center of a life( and is allowed to continue) then this will become master of that life. If you can picture a life controlling problem as a downward spirial that keeps pulling us deeper and deeper, then the qualities that we’ll study from God’s Word are like a ladder that helps us climb out of the deep hole of a life-controlling problem. (quoted out of Insight Book) If we remove a problem out of the center of our life we must fill the center of our life with Jesus before a bigger problem comes in to fill the center. Jesus is our foundation. Jesus is our “stronghold” not some life-controlling problem. This study is to help build a better Christian Character. It takes us down the path to be who God intended us to be. This study is focused on 2 Peter 1:3-11 “3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have recieved all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with LOVE FOR EVERYONE. 8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. 10 So, brothers and sisters, WORK HARD TO PROVE THAT YOU REALLY ARE AMONG THOSE GOD HAS CALLED AND CHOSEN. Do these things, AND YOU WILL NEVER FALL AWAY. 11 Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” What an awesome scripture, with an awesome promise. If we do these things Peter talkd about, we will never fall away and God will give us a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom. WOW!! Awesome!! This is an awesome study that can benifit everyone who takes the class and will allow that Lord to work in their life.

  9. Thanks for sharing this about your Bible study class and how great that you are facilitating it!. Those ‘roadblocks’ you refer to aboove remind me of the ‘blockages’ we learned about this summer from Sara’s Four Bees retreat. They can stop us from ever discovering our authentic selves and then developing the giftings God gave us. You are right, if we stay blocked up, boxed in and focused on them, we won’t experience the real freedom we can have in Christ. And removing roadblocks in the natural takes real physical effort, so I like the scripture you have above “WORK HARD TO PROVE THAT YOU REALLY ARE AMONG THOSE GOD HAS CALLED AND CHOSEN…’it takes work to keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:2).
God bless you and each one as you continue this Bible study!

  10. Rena, in your comment above, you spoke of the 80 year old lady. I laughed, 🙂 she was 87 or 89…Sister Ruth, and strong in the Lord. The real reason I remember, our host there introduced her when it came her time to stand and preach to 1000’s and he said Sister Ruth, 90 years old. She whispered to me on stage in front of all those people, what is wrong with him I am not 90, I am 87 or 89, can’t remember exactly. What a thrill to see and be with this wonderful minister/missionary fight the good fight right to the end….She was a real joy! 80 plus 🙂
