Financial Crises Globally

The Psalmist says, “I have been young and I have been old, but I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging for bread.”

I have been thinking about my place in this financial crisis our nation is going through and will go through for some time. I first remind myself that the righteous have an Anchor in the midst of this crisis. Let us hold on to the words of the Psalmist while being awake, alert to do the things we are directed to do by divine guidance from the Holy Spirit. The Book of John tells us the Holy Spirit, among many other things, is a counselor to us. Yes, a financial counselor to us as well as all other activities in the dailiness of our lives. That is, if we invite Him to be.

I have come to believe it is a joy to wake-up in the morning and be a ‘friend to a friend.’ I want my best friend to be the Holy Spirit, don’t you? He is my mentor, teacher, counselor and comforter. He is my friend.

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch upon the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3). Our Lord knows our needs and how to provide for us. Again, holding on to the words of The Psalmist, “I have been young and I have been old, but I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging for bread.” I want to remain in the camp of the righteous and be given instructions and daily counsel in this hour of our nation’s crisis that affects our personal financial structure as well as globally. Even, I, as an individual has great hope that I can be helpful to myself, my family, community, nation and globally. For I am a part of the answer. John 3:16 (Contemporary English Version)”God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, (Jesus Christ) so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.”

Daily Headlines:

“Debate offers Palin, Biden high risks, big rewards…McCain vs. Obama? Obama calls on Americans to support rescue plan…McCain says Obama policies will deepen recession…What rescue plan is needed? What changes needs to be made?”

My question is, will a few hundred men and women in Congress dictate the future of our nation and the world? I think not? We do have a personal counselor, a great mentor to advise us on our financial needs and demands. We need to remain centered as we walk by faith. “Let your eyes look directly ahead and let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you.” “Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right nor the left, turn your foot from evil.”( Proverbs 4:25-27)

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.(Psalm 37:23) I believe we should map our way with God’s Word and act as He directs our path. We dwell under the “Shadow of The Almighty” (Psalm 91) not under the shadow of our nation’s great financial crises.

My precious niece is located in Charlotte, NC employed with Wachovia. Her side of Wachovia was just sold. She says, ” there is no need to get alarmed as it will take months to work everything out. I am not opposed to moving to New York …if that’s where my job is relocated.” She is centered. She is not wandering aimlessly. She is wise and follows the map God has given us in His Word. We say with Paul, “I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. (I Corinthians 9:26 NLT)

What has your conversation sounded like today? Did you have answers for the can’t do’s with “We can do all things through Christ Jesus who gives us strength” (Philippians 4)

  1. Thanks, Sara, for that confirmation. I wrote that particular Scripture to a friend, yesterday , who was lamenting the buy-out of Wachovia. That Scrpiture about the ‘righteous never being forsaken’ is in the Spirit of God’s poeple at a crisis in time.
The Bible has the formula for sufficiency in destitute and difficult financial times. Proverbs 3: 9-10 says, :Honor the Lord with your CAPITAL and sufficiency from your righteous labors and the firstfruits of all your income”…..WHY?..”So shall your storage places be filled with plenty and your vats shall be overflowing with new wine.”
In Malachi, the Lord exhorts us to bring all the tithes into the storehouse that there might be ‘meat” in His house and He will open the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing that is almost impossible to contain, it shall be so abundant. Thank You Lord Jesus for precious promises of sufficiency and rescue in times of high cost and destituion.
In Proverbs8:17-18, WISDOM cires out, ” I love those who love me and those who seek me early and diligently shall find me, for riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness and my fruit (of Wisdom) is better than GOLD.”

  2. The thoughts and scriptures of this blog are as steady and sure as when Jesus spoke to the storm as his disciples rocked in that boat.
“He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?” Mark 4:39-40

  3. As I read this I thought of a song that my mother clung to when she went through financial crisis and later emotional crisis, and I have also held onto it.

    On Eagles Wings
    Written by Michael Joncas
    Isaiah 40:31
    “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run,
and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.”

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in His shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, “My Refuge,
My Rock in Whom I trust.”
And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
    And famine will bring you no fear;
    Under His Wings your refuge,
    His faithfulness your shield.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
You need not fear the terror of the night,
Nor the arrow that flies by day,
    Though thousands fall about you,
Near you it shall not come.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
For to His angels He’s given a command,
To guard you in all of your ways,
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.

  4. You are right MG. I have felt the best about financial crisis when I made the loans to Kiva. Do it God’s way, is the way, I believe.

  5. Also, Pslam 23, the mainstay of the child of God in crises….the peace bestirring ballad for troubled times and hearts, reassures us that we will always have sufficient if we follow the Word and the counsel of the Lord….God’s way, as you say….
“THe Lord is my SHEPHERD. I SHALL NOT want. He prepares a table (0f abundant provision, fruit and manna) before me in the presence of my enemies (of inflation, high gas prices, raised taxes, price increases in the Super Market)….my cup runneth over (with living water and thrist quenching libation).
Oh! Father God, we do trust in You for you are our Father and Your Holy Spirit Who is in the world NOW, counsels us and You cause us to ride upon the high places during these times of confusion, contradiction and lawlessness. We rest beside Your still waters of grace and mercy and peace and You comfort us and reassure us at every turn. And we receive Your promise of provision, protection and power to overcome, as we look expectantly to dwell in the house of the Lord, forever.” IN CHRIST JESUS, WE THANK YOU WITH GRATEFUL HEARTS.

  6. “Don’t ever worry and say, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear? Everyone is concerned about these things, and your heavenly Father certainly knows you need all of them. But first, be concerned about his kingdom and what has his approval. Then all these things will be provided for you. So don’t ever worry about tomorrow. After all, tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matt 6:31-34

  7. “What has your conversation sounded like today?”I must admit, there have been some times this week, and in recent weeks that I haven’t sounded too blessed, to be employed. We are having to train extra hours for computer work, and extra rules are being implemented, with our schedules, etc. I just have to ask the Lord, right now, to forgive me, and I want to thank Him for my job, and all that He has blessed me with. Yes, “we can do all things through Christ Jesus who gives us strength.”
Thank you, Sara, for sharing your story, about your neice. Even when we feel frustrated, we must do like her, stay centered, be wise, and follow God’s map.

  8. “Confess your flaws to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” (James 5:16).

Needles, when you confessed your lack of praise with what sounds like being overwhelmed. I thought of the above scripture and spoke words of praise over you for strength and encouragement. And then the next verse that came to my mind to pray for you and my niece, “From the end of the earth will they cry unto thee, when their hearts are overwhelmed: lead them to the rock that is higher than them.” Psalm 61:2. I also add another niece that is about to be laid off from a job after many good years from lack of company business. May she be blessed with the words and prayers from the psalmist as I pray them for all three of you.

Needles, you are right, when we stay centered, and use wisdom and follow God’s map, we get blessed and then we pour out to others. The Rock is pouring out water to all three of you, even now as we pray and believe by faith.

  9. I wear my heart on my lips as I pray and believe by faith for Needles, my two nieces, my two sons and my daughter-in-law for perfect peace and favor in their jobs and careers. Favor with all they meet. Favor for advancement and or change where needed or desired. It will be all that God has and wants for them to the fullest because of God’s Word. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

My heart and my lips have caused my eyes to see! Believing is Seeing! And, they too will see God’s favor in their lives.

  10. Oh so much encouragement here, ladies! I love the give and take you have here in comments. Sara, I agree with your post here, we can’t let our eyes go off of God–He’s the one with the plan and our job is to rest in Him and be used however we can be…

Thanks for this, you have a lovely website here!

  11. Thank You, Mary!

I like the way you encouraged me this am when I woke-up with a little doubt. I think I had allowed way too much news to infiltrate my mind this week. When I read your comment, “we can’t let our eyes go off of God. He’s the one with the plan and our job is to rest in Him…” my joy and hope returned. Rest in Him!
Psalm 128:1.2 became a song of my heart for my day. Thank you again, Mary.

“1 Blessed are all who fear the LORD,
    who walk in his ways.
    2 You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.”

  12. Philippians 4:7 (CEV) “Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.”

The Message 6-7 “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”

  13. Sara, I have been thinking about the “FINANCIAL CRISIS”. We turn on the news and we are overwhelmed with crisis. We hear every negative crisis that we can possible hear. The Stock market, gas prices, the lose of jobs, war, crime, murder…… The list goes on and on. If we focus on this, we may become depressed and lose hope. I say turn off the news and turn on the Word of God. 2Peter1:3-8 “3 By his divine power, God has given US EVERYTHING WE NEED for living a godly life. We have recieved all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4And because of hos glory and excellence, HE HAS GIVEN US GREAT AND PRECIOUS PROMISES. These promises that enable you to share his devine nature and ESCAPE THE WORLD’S CORRUPTION CAUSED BY HUMAN DESIRES. 5 IN VIEW OF ALL THIS, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO RESPOND TO GOD’S PROMISE. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godilness, 7and godilness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Peter tells us that God has given us everything we need. He tells us how to ESCAPE THE WORLD’S CORRUPTION. If we have everything we need, why should we worry about the crisis around us. Did Noah focus on the negative people around him? Did he let that negativity distract him from God’s will for his life? Did he put down his hammer and say Lord, I just can’t take the stresses of the world? Did he let the world around him alter his focus? The world around him, that was going to be destroyed by a flood. Noah focused on God’s will. He continued communicating with God and he stayed focused. The world around him fell apart, but he keep his focus on our Lord. Noah “ESCAPED THE WORLD’S CORRUPTION”. God had given Noah everything he needed to lead a godly life. Noah took what God had given him and used it to escape corruption. We will have trials. We will have tough times. We just need to keep our focus on our Lord, just like Noah in his day. James 1:2-4 “2Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, NEEDING NOTHING.” So what do we have to fear. God has given us everything we need. If we listen to Peter we can escape the corruption of the world. SO DON’T WORRY, JUST FOCUS!!!!!!!

  14. Chickenfarmer, what happened to Noah after all you have spoken of above. Sin and shame seems to find us when we are unprepared. Many times after great accomplishments such as Noah had. You asked, ” Did Noah focus on the negative people around him? Did he let that negativity distract him from God’s will for his life?” What caused Noah to sin after his triumph and victory? Genesis 9:18-28, 10:1-32

  15. Sara, you are exacting right. Sin and shame does seem to find us out. It seems like we are tempted, especially after great accomplishments had been done. The footnotes in my bible NLT states ( Noah, the great hero of faith, got drunk-a poor example of godliness to his sons. Perhaps this story is included to show us that even godly people can sin and that their bad influences affects their families. Although the wicked people had all been killed, the possiblility of evil still existed in the hearts of Noah and his family. Ham’s mocking attitude revealed a severe lack of respect for his father and for God.) If we lose control, even for a minute, our sin can effect our lives and our families. We see this with Noah. A man of faith. A man of obedience. A man of focus. A man who loved God and put Him first in the toughest times. A man who let his guard down for a minute when things seemed safe. Sin and shame found him out. It effected him and his son. We must not lose our self-control, not even for a moment.

  16. Thanks Chickenfarmer for giving us the overview of Noah’s life. Noah’s life does show us that as we journey here on earth life can have many turns for us and not for good when we leave God out. The only possible solution to the maze of life is concluded in Ecclesiastes 2:13 :Fear God and obey His commands, for this is everyone’s duty.”

Solomon’s philosophy is not very popular today as he displays the dark philosophy of one’s life separated from God. Solomon in Ecclesiastes gives us a negative lesson to learn a positive lesson. He is clear that wealth, wisdom, (and Solomon had it) popularity and pleasure are all empty tombs in our lives. But when we obey God and His commands all these things and abundantly more become the norm of Joy, Peace and Love. We have meaningful lives and not meaningless lives.

  17. Hebrews 12…The Race of Faith “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

  18. The Scripture says that “for the joy set before Him, He endured the Cross” that horrid, unspeakable, torturing, excruciating death. Yet the joy of the Promise of our Father lead Him to endure that suffering.
Why don’t we respond like Jesus did? The joythat has been set before us has been shown to us in the BIBLE. God promises etermal life, a life of pure joy, ecstasy for eternity in complete communion with the Living God; a mansion, full of glory. The only stipulation is that we receive what Jesus did for us on the cross, a horror we will not have to face because He did it for us….and that we crucify the lusts of the flesh…those besetting sins, errors, mishaps, false calculations, shameful deeds. And if we do that…crucify the lusts, and follow the Lord’s command to love one another, then we can have the joy that is set before us. What is our problem???

  19. Q. what is our problem? as MG asked.

    A. There are many other things that are enjoyable for a season that lead away from the cross and not to the cross of Jesus. And, the real problem is we don’t know the truth and have not ones to tell, show, guide and lead us to truth. Love is at a premium today and not many pay the price. We might be too busy paying for high dollar gasoline to take time for The Promise of Eternity and it’s unknown blessings.
